APRIL FOOLS FOR STEWARDSHIP TRAINING

No April Fool's joke here:
Rev. Jenny is bringing us a half-day workshop,

"Visiting Stewards"

As we near the wrap-up for our annual Pledge Drive, we realize it might be helpful to have one to one conversations about pledging. But who feels qualified and comfortable talking about this? Somehow asking people about pledging feels awkward at best, like prying into our friends' private financial circumstances. Yet, with a surprisingly small amount of skill development, talking about money and pledges can not only be easy, but FUN!

Shaking your head in disbelief? Okay, how about this:
  • Come for a mini-workshop at the Meeting House.
  • Learn valuable skills for talking about church finances and pledging.
  • Enjoy lunch on the House!
Best of all, this is a zero-pressure 'try it and then decide' training. If you realize you could indeed feel comfortable talking to one or two people about pledging, sign up! If you try it and decide, absolutely no way are you going to talk to anyone about pledging, say so! It'll be okay.

Either way, you'll enjoy a few hours among friends, learn something new, and have lunch in the bargain.

WHAT: Visiting Steward Skills Training Session with Rev. Jenny
WHEN: Saturday, April 1st, 9:30am - 1:00pm
WHERE: UU Meeting House, 426 W Lewis
LUNCH INCLUDED: Menu of sandwiches & wraps, with gluten free and vegan options available.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING, OR SIGN UP? All materials will be provided. Sign-up optional.

For a good lunch count, email Rev. Jenny: minister@pocatellouu.org and RSVP.

Are You Curious About Drumming?

March 9th, 2:30 at the Meeting House

An opportunity to join a small group to practice not only drumming but what is called Body Percussion is available. Becky and Eric have been meeting on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays around 2:30 until 4:00pm at the Meeting House.

Please come join us!

You can bring a drum if you have one, or just bring yourself. We explore different drumming patterns. We certainly are not into perfection. It is fun and relaxing. We appreciate the sounds we join together and the influence from other cultures.

A UU PERSPECTIVE FROM OUR MEMBER BOB GEHRKE

Often, in conversation, usually involving religion, we Unitarian Universalists are assumed by others that we can believe anything, that we have no dogma or beliefs. And as often as not we go along with this comment. As a result, we give the wrong impression. Unitarian Universalism is much more than a social group meeting for coffee to discuss the weather, family, friends, and other mutual interests. While each of us shares a personal view of the sacred and while many of us believe in a God, many others have a more broad view of the sacred that does not necessarily place a supreme being at the center and in some cases do not believe in a supreme being at all. Our faith is not a dogmatic faith where the faith believers accept the same dogma.

Unitarian Universalists have a covenantal faith. A covenantal faith is one that is shared among its members who respect the personal beliefs of our fellow congregants even when their beliefs are different from our own. Our governance is horizontal and not vertical. We also actively support many social justice issues. The Unitarian Universalist Association of which our fellowship is a member has adopted the following living principles which we affirm and promote.

1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our
congregations;
4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
5. The right of conscience and use of the democratic process within our
congregations and society at large;
6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

These principles can be modified or added to, and our UUA recommends
revisiting the language about once a generation, or every fifteen years. In fact, we are overdue! Revision suggestions have been submitted and will be voted on at our
annual national General Assembly this coming June.

While these principles are broadly ascribed to by our membership, they are not a
firm requirement for being a member. So next time someone claims that UUs can
believe anything, set them straight on our principles.

PUUF Parking

A recent message from our Rental Agency informed us that Police surveillance will be increasing in the neighborhood of the Meeting House. 2-hour parking will be patrolled. Please remember we can always park in the parking lot across the street on Lewis. Side streets that do not have 2-hour parking limits are a better choice for long term parking.
