Dear Parents,

Black History Assembly
Please join us for our Black History Month Celebration Assembly on Tuesday! Grades 3-4 and the American Sign Language Classes will be hosting our event. Please see the note from Mr. Vega below:

Please join us on Tuesday, February 28th for our Black History Month Celebration Assembly! The first show is at 7:45 AM and the second show is at 8:45 AM. Both shows will feature the same performers (3rd/4th grade) but we hold two shows to accommodate the entire school. All parents of the performers are welcome to attend.   All students school-wide, are invited to wear black, yellow, green, or red clothing/accessories. If performers do not own these colors, their Sunday best will do just fine.

Parents, if you cannot make it - we will be livestreaming our assembly and posting it to YouTube. You can visit our Black History Assembly on the Thorp website.

IAR Testing

Our state testing in Reading and Math starts in just 15 school days. At Thorp we see the IAR test as a way to show everyone across the state how well we are doing. We have been working with your child to ensure that they are prepared. For more information please see our IAR Testing / Google Classroom Presentation.

Lost and Found

The lost and found has been relocated to the Security Desk. We will donate our lost and found items to agencies serving recently arrived immigrant families on the first Friday of each month.

Please remember to label your child’s coat and other personal items (lunchbox, water bottles, etc.). This will make it easier for the items to be returned to your child. If you would like to go through the Lost and Found before or after school, you can check in at the security desk with Mr. Serbia.

Thorp in the Community
I would like to thank the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois for hosting our Thorp Debate team and explaining the functions of our federal court system. A very special thanks to Judge Kendall, Judge Tharp and Assistant US Attorney Pascual for their informative question and answer session with our students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

You may volunteer for the school parent groups by clicking the  Volunteer Interest Form.  Active participation in our parent groups is one of the best opportunities to become part of our school community.

If you plan on volunteering for a field trip please register here. (We know that it says day trip chaperones require a level 2 clearance, but parent chaperones are often out of the line of sight of the teacher and a more rigorous check helps to ensure the safety of all of our students.

LSC Information and Committees

Fun Facts about the CIWP!

(Wait. There are fun facts about the CIWP? Yes!)

1. CIWP stands for Continuous Improvement Work Plan.

(Well, that does not sound very fun. Well, no, but bear with me. What the CIWP *does* is pretty cool…)

2. Every two years the school community gets to decide what the school needs to work on in order to get better and stronger. Those “areas of need” get written into a document that guides school resources, attention and planning. That is the CIWP.

(Okay, I’m listening.)

3. Right now parents and guardians are meeting monthly to discuss the topics most important to families at Thorp. At the end of the year, we’ll have recommendations about issues the school needs to work on. Things that should go into the CIWP.

(Hmm. Okay, that does sound a little fun. And Important.)

4. The CIWP Parent Focus Group’s next meeting will be Monday, February 27th at 6 pm, both in person at the school and online. Anyone who shows up in person will get cookies.

(Cookies are definitely fun!)

5. Need more information? Email Amy Ellison at stillellison@mac.com. We’d love representation from families in all grades. We want to use this committee as a means of building community, solving problems…and having a little fun.

(Well, I might just be sold!  🙂)

The Seal of BiLiteracy Exam will be given March 1 - 15. This exam is given to students that speak another language at home. Please see The Pathways to the Seal of Biliteracy Brochure in English and Spanish for quick information about the award.

7th/8th Grade Updates

We are awaiting Graduation picture proofs soon.

Parents,

Each week, we will be highlighting different teachers. This week we would like to showcase Mr. Sertic, our 3/4 Math teacher.
 Alex Sertic`s profile picture

Hello! I am excited to be at Thorp teaching 3rd and 4th grade math. This is one of my favorite ages to work with students and I always love getting to know each child. I attended North Park for undergrad and graduate school. I enjoy hiking, photography, reading a good book (historical fiction is my favorite!), running, and spending time with my family. I am a die-hard Cubs and Bears fan!
