Hawai'i Art News From

Aloha Friends,
As we enter the season of Spring, I'm filled with the excitement brought on by the promise  of color and fun. April is a great month to take the lessons of the past and create an amazing future.

The photo above is from the KAI Ocean Art Show at the Moana Resort in Waikīkī. "Honu Leahi" is a painting of a sea turtle taking a breath of air near the back side of Mount Leahi, also known as Diamond Head.

The Art Tip this time is on The Art Of Recognition. It discusses a skill that I feel is even more important than painting.

Big Island Friends, come join me for a Honeybee Painting Class and Hive Tour on May 13 or 14 in 'Āhualoa. Read about it below and sign up bee-fore it sells out.

During the month of April, we have a Buy Two Get One Free Special on Makapu'u Lighthouse T-shirts. Get two for you and one for someone who loves this famous lighthouse hike.

This year's Painting in Paradise Artist Retreat will be held in July, back at our original paradise beach house in Waimānalo. This is a heads-up for those interested in planning a trip to Hawaii to participate in it.

The Pacific Golden Plover called Kōlea is the featured bird on the Painting in Paradise tv show on Spectrum OC16tv and on my Patrick Ching Youtube channel.

Enjoy all this, and our Favorite Photos, in this Spring Into April News Letter.

With Thanks and Aloha from me,

.

ART TIP -
The Art of Recognition

There's something I feel I'm better at than painting and that something is Recognizing. So what do I recognize you may ask? I recognize greatness, especially in its raw form. I like to think I can recognize talent, which is actually not difficult because everyone's got some.
The trick is for each of us to recognize it in ourselves.

What's Your Talent? Is it creating art? With pencil, with paint, with words or music? Is it in arranging words with non-traditional spelling rules? See if you can create your own category in which your greatness can shine.

We all know that artists see more than most people because we train ourselves in acute observation.

If you ever find yourself searching for something to be great at, try honing your skills of observation, because along with that you'll acquire the art of recognition.

Painting In Paradise TV Show

Learn about the Pacific Golden Plover called the kōlea. The kōlea is a migratory bird that lives in Hawaii but spends its summers in Alaska, where it breeds and nests.
I’ll show you how to draw the kōlea, and then we'll join two kōlea painting classes: one on Kaua‘i at Kaua‘i Koa Farm, and one on O‘ahu at the Waikīkī Aquarium.
Enjoy all this, and more, on a far-flying episode of Painting in Paradise!

You can see the episode here:

In the upcoming episode of Painting in Paradise, we'll revisit Painting in Paradise Art Retreats through the years, from its origins in Waimānalo, to last year's festivities in Waikīkī.

Aloha Betty Hay Freeland

Betty Hay Ka'iulani Wodehouse Freeland was born in 1939 in Kohala and passed away on Maui on March 7, 2003. This was the last time I saw her at the Paint Maui Plein Air Invitational in Lahaina in February 2023.

She was a great inspiration to me and we shared a love of the far-away mountain blues that mesmerized me in many of her paintings. Betty Hay will live on in the hearts of her friends and family and will always be remembered for her timeless beauty, extraordinary artistic talent, and her love for Hawaiʻi.

Betty Hay was well known for her rich pallet knife paintings that she continues to reach people through. Aloha Betty Hay and Mahalo for your sharing your life of color.
