News & Updates

Recently, the GRC hosted a two-day international workshop aimed at improving the correspondent-fixer dynamic in global reporting. We brought together journalists, fixers, editors, producers, and scholars from over 15 countries to recognize and reimagine the power imbalances that characterize this working relationship. Keep an eye out, as we plan to publish guidelines based on our workshop findings.

The workshop developed out of a 2017 research project, when GRC executive director and founder Peter Klein, and Shayna Plaut, the director of the Centre for Social Science Research and Policy at the University of Manitoba, conducted a survey of more than 450 working journalists from 70+ countries, and subsequently interviewed 35 of the respondents. They found that journalists and fixers recognize a problem in their working relationship but diverge in how best to address the issue.

You may have noticed that we've recently rebranded our website and logo. Branding reflects an organization's identity — it personifies ethics and core values. Thus, our new logo — minus the globe — demonstrates our determination to try new methods when stories demand them, to connect and collaborate with those who are similarly committed to investigating under-reported stories, to share others' stories ethically and fairly, and to devote the time and resources necessary to do quality, in-depth research and reporting.

Introducing our new Global Supply Chain Reporting Fellow, Emma Barnes-Lewis. Emma is a second-year Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Business, Organisations, and Society, School of Management, University of Bath. Her work focuses on modern slavery and how policies affect survivors' lives.

As the 2022-2023 Supply Chain Reporting Fellow, Emma will work on a project uncovering the realities survivors of modern slavery face in the wake of controversial changes made by the U.K. Government to public policies, such as the introduction of the Nationality and Borders Act and changes to the current Modern Slavery Act. The project will investigate support for survivors of U.K. modern slavery through testimony, policy and photography and is funded through our academic journalism collaboration grant.

GRC RECEIVES GRANT TO RESEARCH DISINFORMATION

Our ongoing project Shooting the Messenger: Credibility Attacks on Journalists, was one of 16 research proposals awarded funding from Heritage Canada's Digital Citizen Contribution Program to strengthen Canadians' resilience against harmful online disinformation.

We'll use this grant to build upon the 'Shooting the Messenger' survey — conducted in partnership with the Committee to Protect Journalists and Simon Fraser University's Disinformation Project. Part One of the project is a case study about Moroccan journalists facing coordinated Facebook attacks for their reporting. Stay tuned for more about our survey findings later this spring!

END-OF-YEAR GIVING UPDATE

In December, we ran an end-of-year giving campaign where every dollar raised was matched by The TRACE Foundation, up to US $25,000. Many of you donated, and the results are in — we raised $50,545, or 75% of our goal.

Thank you so much to those of you who gave! Your donations go directly to supporting our production of high-quality stories with impact. From our team to you, we’d like to give a heartfelt thank you!
FAR-REACHING IMPACT REQUIRES YOUR SUPPORT

Taking a more thoughtful approach to reporting requires time and attention to detail. We endeavour to tell stories that can be too complex for daily news media to cover. To do this, we need to partner with people like you to get the job done. Consider making a tax-deductible donation today so we can continue to do this important work.
