Thunderally’s Shining Star

“When you wish upon a star your dreams will take you very far…”
                                        Earth Wind and Fire

My entire life I had always been involved in rescue. As anyone knows rescuing can be rewarding but also very devastating. In July of 2021 I rescued a mini bull terrier from the US. I loved the Bull Terrier breed. This rescue ended in a broken heart as the little guy sadly passed away in October 2021.

Nursing a broken heart I contacted Carol Gray of THUNDERALLY with questions about buying a puppy. She did not have a puppy to sell me but welcomed me into her home to visit with a puppy she was keeping from her last litter. So, on a cold but sunny November afternoon I drove from Barrie ( visiting my daughter) to St Catherine’s to get some puppy snuggles and I met and fell in love with Starr. Though I lived far away in Newfoundland over the course of several visits Carol and Gord agreed to let Starr come to live with me.
And so began our adventure together. I had never purchased a purebred dog from a breeder before and I certainly had never been to a dog show. That was all about to change.

I decided to stay a while in Ontario so that I could take Starr to her first dog show. It was in Feb 2022 at Wildwood. Starr was just 5 months old. She won two first places in 4-6 month puppy as well as a second and a best puppy in group. We were off to the races! She travelled home to Newfoundland with me the following week and no we did NOT screech her in!
Her next show was in April in Newfoundland and she was awarded Best Puppy in Show as well as a Group 1 a Group 2 and a Group 3. She went on to place again in Moncton in May

In June she attended her 3rd show and received group placements and a Reserve Best in Show  at just 9 months old and receive her Championship.
The summer saw us back in Ontario to complete a round of shows where Starr continued to shine and place.

We ended the year back in Newfoundland and she saw several more placements and she ended the year as the Number 1 Miniature Bull Terrier in Canada.
She will attend her first show in 2023 in Newfoundland in April before travelling to Halifax and Ontario and then out  to western Canada!

We can’t wait to see what the future hold! It is so bright we may have to wear shades!

So You Want To Hire a Professional Handler?

My general response from people is that “HANDLERS ALWAYS WIN”. This irks me to no end. There is nothing more intimidating to a Pro Handler than to go up against a powerful Breeder/Owner/Handler. These are the true dog people of the Sport. They know their breed inside out and have hours to spend preparing their ONE breed.

A Professional Handler must hone their skills and knowledge in readying themselves to take on the Professional Owner. This is why WE are called PROFESSIONALS. We have earned our name through many years of apprenticing with the very best before we ever decided to become a handler.

Be wary of the “pop-up” handler that bought a van, and business cards and has therefore dubbed themselves a Handler without any experience of working hard in the trenches with those that could have taught them.

My criteria for choosing a Professional Handler is listed below:

DON’T hire someone solely on the amount of ribbons they win in a day. Although impressive, it is more important to watch how the handlers set up is run during the day.

At this point you have already made a decision on a few who interest you. Just because a handler is not in their set up all day, does not mean they are neglecting their charges. They are probably busy showing all of their exhibits. This is where the competent assistant comes in.
DO take note that there is someone in the set up at all times. Are the dogs constantly crated? Not all shows are expen friendly but the majority are and the dogs should take turns lounging in expens. Are the assistants knowledgeable in the grooming and well being of dogs in the handler’s care? A handler is only as good as those that work for them. It shows the handlers ability to train and teach people that have the same values as they do.

An assistant needs to have a take charge attitude which includes exercising dogs on a regular basis, following schedules, and maintaining a grooming schedule that allows the dogs to be ring ready ON TIME.

Make sure for the number of dogs the handler is carrying that they have enough assistants to care for them. Twenty dogs and one assistant is not something that works well.

If you are still questioning a chosen handler, try coming back to the building for last exercise. Do you witness handlers and assistants trudging outside no matter the weather to give the dogs some fresh air and play time? It is no fun for show dogs to be shuffled from crate to expen to grooming table day after day. Taking them for walks or playing in the rings with them late at night will keep your dogs’ mind in top show condition.

Is the handlers set up kept clean and organized during the day?
Do the dogs all have access to fresh water? Are their buckets cleaned daily?
Will your dog be kept on his regular diet or will the handler provide their own brand of food to feed everyone because it is “easier”?
If you wish to send your dog with a handler, do they have adequate kennel facilities in order to house your dog for overnight stays?
What type of vehicle and what size crate will your dog be travelling in? Make sure these are up to your specifications.
Is there a contract for you to sign stating the charges set forth and explaining any added costs the handler may have.  Are you given  their contact phone number?
Before you hire a handler, please ask if there will be any extra charges, because in most cases there are. Whether it is for expenses pro-rated, special dietary needs, heavy coated breeds will have extra charges, do they charge bonuses and so forth. Know exactly what you are paying for BEFORE you send your dog on the road.

DON’T ever shop for the cheapest handler. As with anything, you get what you pay for in the long run. Experience, longevity, cleanliness and basic common dog sense knowledge are the most important things to think of when preparing to hire someone.

Does your chosen handler have a website that shows their credentials and facilities?
Does your chosen handler have all the knowledge needed to prepare and deal with your breed? Most Professionals, if not comfortable with the type of grooming or breed that you have asked about will definitely turn you towards someone that they feel are more qualified than they are. This is the way ETHICAL handlers respect and work with each other.
Does the handler you have chosen have the knowledge and animal husbandry to know when a dog is not feeling right? Will they know enough to seek medical attention no matter how small the issue may be? Will you be notified immediately in any changes of your dogs’ behavior when on the road?

Feel free to ask for client recommendations. It might also be to your benefit to run your choice by your breeder first. They have been in the dog fancy a lot longer than you have and might have some insight for you as well.
A good Professional will always make time for you. If you are approaching a handler at a show and they are busy at that time, they will always give you a time frame to come back and talk.

Please remember, just because you have hired a handler, instant gratification is not always the norm. It takes time for a handler to get to know a dog, earn the dog’s trust, and work together as a team. A professional handler’s job description is not that of just spending ten minutes in a ring a day. I do not know of another occupation that requires around the clock attention like this one does.

The professionals show hours are from 5 AM to 11 PM.  On the whole, they do not get a guaranteed lunch hour like regular jobs. Going out for dinner becomes a luxury when shows end much later some of the days. Not many would apply for a job with working conditions such as this.

Add in the long travel hours, the loading and unloading of trucks, and this job is not for the faint of heart. A true professional will be easy to distinguish from those that have just decided they have earned the right to be in the same category.

Hopefully these few tips will help you with your decision if and when  considering hiring a Professional Handler.
