A Message from President Wente

Following the completion of a national search, I am pleased to announce that Jackie Krasas, Ph.D., will join Wake Forest University as the new Dean of the College and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. She will begin July 1. Provost Gillespie and I shared this good news in a message to the campus community earlier today.

Dr. Krasas comes from Lehigh University, where she currently serves as deputy provost for faculty affairs. She brings extensive scholarship, teaching and administrative experience to her role as Dean. We are confident she will further enhance and extend Wake Forest’s reputation for academic and research excellence while developing new ways to ensure our faculty and students flourish.

Please join us for a welcome reception to meet Dr. Krasas on Friday, March 17, in the Reynolda Hall Main Lounge (Green Room) at 3:30 p.m. You can also learn more about her in the news release posted on the Wake Forest News website.

Reminder about academic advising and important upcoming academic dates

  • Undergraduate students need to be meeting with their academic adviser(s) for advising this week or next week (if they haven’t already met). The advising period runs from March 13-24.
  • For any undergraduates wishing to drop a full term course with a grade of W (Course Withdrawal), the deadline is March 17. The Office of Academic Advising website provides details on required conversations and signatures needed to withdraw from a course; allow adequate time to get all the necessary approvals before the deadline. A grade of W does not have any impact on your GPA.
  • The last day to drop second part-of-term classes and the last day to change from a letter grade to a pass/fail grade in an approved second part-of-term class (undergraduates) is Thursday, March 23.
  • Graduate and professional school students should consult their school or program’s calendar for key academic dates and advising information.

Commencement ticket registration is now open

  • Students who are eligible to graduate in May have been sent a registration link with the option to register for University Commencement tickets, Baccalaureate service tickets and parking passes. Students must order tickets for their guests.
  • Undergraduate student ticket pick-up will take place Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 in the Green Room of Reynolda Hall (exact times TBA). Graduate student ticket pick-up information will be provided by each graduate school program.
  • Undergraduate students who complete their ticket registration will receive 8 guest tickets for the Commencement ceremony (9 a.m. Monday, May 15) and up to 2 tickets for Baccalaureate (11 a.m. Sunday, May 14); students do not need to have a ticket for themselves if they are planning to march in the student processional for each ceremony.
  • Graduate and professional students do not need tickets for their Hooding and Commencement ceremonies. They may register for up to 2 tickets for Baccalaureate (11 a.m. Sunday, May 14), and a set of 8 guest tickets for the University Commencement ceremony (9 a.m. Monday, May 15) if they wish to attend the full University ceremony. Graduate and professional students do not need to have a ticket for themselves if they are planning to march in the student processional for each ceremony.
  • We regret that due to space limitations, we cannot offer additional guest tickets; students can work with their friends and classmates who do not need their full allotment of tickets if they need extras.
  • Please order your Commencement regalia as soon as possible. Shipping can take up to four weeks, and orders ship in the order they are received. A limited number of undergraduate caps and gowns will be available for purchase at the Bookstore; note that limited sizes will be stocked.
  • Fulfillment of ticket requests are contingent upon full clearance to graduate, which is determined by the Office of the University Registrar.

How Wake Forest selects Commencement speakers

This year, Wake Forest increased the intentionality of the Commencement speaker selection process to emphasize alignment with the University’s motto of Pro Humanitate. Provost Michele Gillespie implemented a new governance structure to help organize Commencement weekend activities, and each year, a Commencement Speaker Committee of faculty, staff and students will nominate a prioritized slate of potential guest speakers to submit to President Susan Wente. The committee also developed a guiding philosophy to inform the Commencement speaker selection process. The University will announce the 2023 Commencement speaker in the next few weeks and begin soliciting nominations for the 2024 speaker in April.
