A Letter From The Rector

St. Paul's Weekly Update

March 17, 2023

Dear Friends,

As we journey through these weeks of Lent, join us for our Sunday Lenten Adult Formation Series, and Wednesday evening celebration of Eucharist/Bible study.  In the midst of March Madness don’t miss “Mulch Madness” this Saturday at St. Paul’s.  This Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for newcomers to experience a tour of St. Paul’s grounds and buildings.  Hear about the history of this faith community through the stories of its facilities.  I’ll be leading the tour and look forward to you joining me.  Hermano Day is this Sunday. Please join us as we gather to express our gratitude for those who plant and harvest our food.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, a day for me filled with wonderful memories of growing up just outside of New York City, and celebrating with parades, fun, and food.
     See you at church Sunday.
               George
Adult Formation
On Sundays between 10:15-11:00 a.m. in the St. Paul’s Chapel, join us for a conversation about leadership.
We all have ideas about what makes for a good leader – and, maybe, one too many examples about what doesn’t.  What does it mean to be a leader, and what qualities does a good leader embody?  How does Jesus’ life and ministry shape our understanding of faithful leadership, both within the church as well as out in the world?
As we head back to the Chapel for our in-person forums, the sessions will no longer be streamed live online. Instead, they will be recorded and posted to the St. Paul’s YouTube page afterward.  We appreciate your patience and understanding; the recordings should be available within a few days of when the particular forum takes place.

Mulch Madness in the Courtyard

Looking for a way to burn off some energy and make an impact at St. Paul’s?  Grab a rake or shovel and join us on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. in the courtyard as we move mulch into the flower beds in preparation for the growing season.  Muscle energy and music makes the work go quickly; please sign up here.
We are also looking for one or two more pickup trucks for delivering the mulch that morning.  Contact Julia Rudy at jbrudy@yahoo.com if you have a pickup truck and would be willing to bring a load of mulch.
Newcomer Tour This Sunday
Have you recently visited, or are you returning to St. Paul’s after a time away?  Would you like to learn more about us?  Please consider joining us for a guided tour of the campus on the third Sunday of each month at 10:15 a.m.
Meet at the Welcome Station in the narthex (lobby) of the Church for a casual walk around key spaces, ending at Coffee Hour in the Parish Hall.  Get to know others who have recently visited and start making connections.  Contact Mary Kintz, our Community Connector, at mary.kintz@stpaulscary.org if you have any questions.  No advance notice is necessary, join us when you can.
Hermano Day 2023 This Sunday
This Sunday, March 19, is Hermano Day at St. Paul’s, when we recognize the sacrifice of our neighbors who do the hard work of planting and harvesting our food.  One way the Farmworker Ministry here at St. Paul’s supports the work of the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry in Newton Grove, NC, is by collecting donations of clothes and other items (see below for a list of most needed items) and presenting them on Hermano Day.  Financial donations are always welcome.  Contact Katie Bricio (katiebricio13@gmail.com) with any questions, or if you need to drop off donations before March 19.
    The items needed most include:
Work Pants – sizes 30 through 34: used are fine; and preferably lightweight, not jeans
Long sleeved shirts – sizes small, M, L, preferably lightweight and light colors
Towels – bath and hand towels
          Socks – sport all sizes
T- shirts – short and long sleeved, sizes small and medium
          Baseball caps – M, L
Bandanas – to cover head and the neck
          Shower bags/or individual items:
          Soap
          Deodorant
          Shampoo (medium/regular size)
          Shaving razors
          Shaving cream
          Toothbrush and toothpaste
          Hydrocortisone cream (1%)
          Athlete’s foot cream
          Ibuprofen or Tylenol
          Band aids
Movie Night March 27 at 7:00 p.m.
     Hey, Movie Lovers!
You are invited to join us each month for Movie Night, a discussion of recent and not-so-recent movies, hosted by Fr. Javier and Tad Richard.
This month, we’ll be discussing the multi-Oscar-winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once.  Be advised that this genre-bending movie is very strange and at times wildly irreverent, so it may not be for everyone.  It should make for lively discussion though!
We will meet at Fortnight Brewing Company, which is close to the church, on Monday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m.  Fortnight has good outdoor (covered) seating, they offer non-alcoholic drink options in addition to beer, and are OK if you bring your own non-alcoholic drink.
If you are interested – of course you are interested! – watch the movie ahead of time and join us there and then.
Email Tad if you have any questions.
