‘HEAD’ Lines

Helping Others

Dear Parents/Carers

As I hope many of you will already be aware, this year we are continuing our proud tradition of raising money for a worthy cause by doing something ‘really hard’.

After 2 amazing fundraising efforts in previous years via 24-hour bikeathons, this year it’s a whole new ball game! Indeed, not just a ball game, but also rackets, bats, nets and hockey sticks.

Headed up by some of my amazing staff and year 11 students, the school will once again be coming together to raise money; this year by playing sport for 24 hours.

John Hanson 24 Hour Sportathon “Max’s Marathon"
Why would anyone put themselves through this? – just read below.

At the age of 12 months, Max was diagnosed with a rare condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) also known as Brittle Bones. Max has a milder form of Brittle Bones. He has 'only' broken 20 or so long bones including his; legs, arms, and spine in the last 9 years. (Max doesn’t count the small breaks in fingers and toes). Other children who have a more severe form of OI have broken over 250 bones!

The Edney family have had so much support from The Brittle Bone Society, and we want to help to 'make some noise' to raise awareness of this rare condition. We also want to raise funds to help with much-needed research, emotional support and physical support for children and adults who have OI.

On Thursday 30th March, 2 teams of John Hanson staff and students will be competing in a 24hr sports marathon, to raise money for the Brittle Bone Society. Throughout the event, the 2 main teams will compete in 12 sports, with other staff and students joining them during the 24 hours.

All of the money raised will go towards helping young people with brittle bones to go on residential trips where they will be able to take part in a range of accessible activities such as climbing, canoeing and zip wires.

Thank you for supporting our event and this very worthy cause.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Max and his parents will be joining ‘Max’s Marathon’ on Thursday to play some sports and join again on Friday for the fun run at the end of the 24-hour event.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.

Important EDI events over the next week:

Words you might not know:
Down Syndrome: Down's syndrome is when a person is born with an extra chromosome. Getting an extra chromosome is chance, because of a change in the sperm or egg before a person is born. This change does not happen because of anything anyone did before or during pregnancy.
