Dance Marathon sets stage for next 25 years

Emily Saidel, a senior business major who has been part of Dance Marathon since her freshman year, understands how illness affects a family.

Her father has battled cancer, and one of her closest friends passed away while they were still in high school.
Those experiences helped motivate her to give her time to help kids battling illnesses of their own.
Dance Marathon is the university’s largest student-run philanthropic organization, raising more than $7.2 million since its inception, with all the money staying close to home.

Board of Trustees March meeting

During the Board of Trustees meeting on Friday (March 17), four committees met.

Several campus construction projects were approved for full board consideration in April.
The trustees were updated on student parking and mental health programs.
Athletics Director Ray Tanner received a contract extension.

South Main work begins

Work has begun on the South Main Street project, which will affect parking and traffic on South Main between the State House and Blossom Street.

Parking lots will be accessible from South Main throughout the project.
Pedestrians should use the east side of the street during the first phase of the project.

Toni Torres-McGehee wins national Athletic Trainer Service Award

The National Association of Athletic Trainers has selected exercise science associate professor Toni Torres-McGehee as a 2023 recipient of the organization’s Athletic Trainer Service Award.

The honor recognizes recipients for their contributions to professional associations, community organizations, grassroots public relations efforts and service as a volunteer athletic trainer.

What she's saying: “Being a first-generation student, I was extremely blessed to have great mentors and support throughout my academic journey and career,” says Torres-McGehee, who also found inspiration in her mother’s dedication to serving their church and community.

Robert Smalls Lecture set for Thursday

Tressie McMillan Cottom, an award-winning writer, sociologist, cultural critic, professor with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life at UNC Chapel Hill, and MacArthur Fellow, will speak on “Troubling the Public During Troubling Times” at the 26th annual Robert Smalls Lecture.

The lecture series began in 1997 and is named for Civil War hero and South Carolina Congressman Robert Smalls.

If you're going: The event is free and open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday (March 23) in the Karen J. Williams Courtroom at the School of Law.
