Contribute to a Resilient City
Have Your Say

We take caring for our City seriously and that means making sure we're ready for the future.  CBCity has prepared a draft resilience strategy to ensure the City is able to survive, adapt and thrive, no matter what challenges we face today and in the future as our diverse community grows and changes.

We want to make sure our plans serve the community, so we're inviting you to have your say on the draft strategy. You can find information and contribute your feedback by visiting this page.
Get Amongst It
Nature Safari

Get into nature with an experienced ecologist as your guide. This is a great chance to discover the wild things that inhabit our local parks.

On this special Nature Safari, participants will be trained to use their own senses to unlock the local natural world, discover local wildlife and get familiar with the creatures that rule our local habitats. Be amazed by the diversity of wildlife our local area has to offer, many of which are regularly overlooked.

31 March 2023 (special after school time)
iNaturalist
A fun way to help your environment

Explore and share your observations from the natural world. How many wild animals and plants live in your local area?

Discover what wild things inhabit Canterbury-Bankstown. Our city has plenty to discover across its many parks, rivers and even in our backyards.

We're calling on citizen scientists of all ages to help document our amazing flora and fauna. You don’t need to be an expert, just snap a photo! Simply make observations about the plants and animals you encounter and upload them to the iNaturalist app.

It’s as easy as see it, snap it, share it.

We Love Our Rivers
In CBCity, we love our rivers.

Canterbury-Bankstown is a City of three rivers – the Cooks, the Georges and the Duck. Our rivers are all different but each plays an important role in the ecosystem we share.

From March to May each year, we show how We Love Our Rivers by hosting and promoting events in and around our waterways. Check out the range of events by clicking here.

Give a Hoot for Powerful Owls

Help Us Find Our Owls

Powerful Owls are incredible birds. They are Australia’s largest owl with a wingspan of up to 140cm, and form breeding pairs that mate for life. Despite their sensitivity to disturbance, they can still be found in some Sydney suburbs, particularly those with small areas of bushland.

As part of Council’s Powerful Owl Project, Council has installed habitat boxes to provide additional nesting options and is actively investigating local Powerful Owl populations by looking for nesting trees and tracking calls. In collaboration with researchers, last year a breeding pair was successfully located using audio recorders, but we believe there are more breeding pairs about.

We still need your help. The Powerful Owl has a unique call that is more vocal during the breeding season from May to July. Reporting Powerful Owl calls will help us to find our local breeding pairs so that we can better protect them.

Seen or heard a Powerful Owl? Tell us more to help protect Australia’s largest owl.

Backyard Bird Survey

While you're looking for owls...

It’s time to get your Birds in Backyards Autumn Survey in!

Birds in Backyards surveys are an important part of research into the birds that share their environments with us. The surveys are used to track the health of our urban birds, and to monitor the impact of our gardens, outdoor spaces and our own behaviours on bird populations. They can even help us to understand how different types of gardens can attract different birds, and which features birds may be avoiding or are negatively affected by.

Birds in Backyards surveys typically run at the beginning of each season), but you can still submit surveys at any time. You can also do as many surveys as you like, as often as you like! All you do is submit at least one 20-minute count alongside some information about your garden. Anyone with a backyard or common garden - large or small - can take part. And there’s no need to be an expert birdwatcher to help, the survey has features to assist you like a list of 30 common birds in your area with photos.

Contribute to Better Local Government
Council is undertaking an important Review on how we undertake community engagement.

We want to make it easier for your voice to be heard, and to make sure your input gets the response it deserves. We're working with the University of Technology Sydney Centre for Local Government (UTS: CLG) to conduct a review of how we listen and respond to our community.

Your feedback is critical part of this process. You can have your say throughout March and April 2023 in one of the following ways:
  1. Fill in a short online survey which will be available on Council’s Have Your Say website
  2. Contact Amy Lawton, Senior Consultant at UTS: CLG on amy.lawton@uts.edu.au with written feedback or to set up a time to share your views through a short conversation.

We look forward to your contribution to this important Council initiative!
