Archaeological Discovery Methods Presentation Set at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK, N.D. – “Archaeological Discovery Through Geophysics and Remote Sensing in North Dakota” will be presented by Kenneth L. Kvamme at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. The event is free and open to the public. The lecture will be available for live streaming at bit.ly/ArchaeologicalDiscoveryPresentation.

How do modern archaeologists discover buried remains of the past without digging? Learn about the latest technology that is helping archaeologists decipher the past without having to disturb the soil and the artifacts that lay below the surface. Kvamme will present an overview of geophysical methods, including ground-penetrating radar, used for such research and focus on results from North Dakota's ancestral villages of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation as well as historic fur trading posts of the 19th century.

Professor emeritus of anthropology and archaeology at the University of Arkansas, Kvamme also has previous service at Boston University, the University of Arizona, and the University of Denver. Much of his career has focused on archaeological detection through geophysical prospecting and remote sensing. His work in geophysics has taken him to projects around the world, but he has specialized in the archaeology of the American Great Plains, particularly in the Dakotas. Kvamme is author or co-author of more than 100 articles, three books, and 150 technical reports.

The ND Heritage Center & State Museum is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, contact Amy Munson, at 701.328.3573. Find a calendar of upcoming State Historical Society events at history.nd.gov/events.
