YOUTH MURALS FEATURED ON MISSION STREET, NEW VIDEO CELEBRATES MURAL IN TENDERLOIN
Partnership with Gray Area gives young artists a prominent canvas; drone footage captures the making of Baobab Rising above tough streets.
"Spirit" by Alberto Martinez and "Veaw" by Aiden Riordan
The first youth murals from the new partnership between Precita Eyes Muralists andGray Area Foundation for the Arts made their appearance this month. The partnership supports young emerging artists by giving them a prime spot on the bay doors of the Gray Area building at 2665 Mission St. The murals will change every six months to feature a new set of youth muralists. Aiden Riordan, 17, and Alberto Martinez, 24, inaugurated the program with their spray-painted works, above.
The new murals are not the only facelift for the former Grand Theater. After 30 years of blackout, its classy neon marquee is once again shining its light, as reported by Mission Local.
EYES UP, NEW FILM ON BAOBAB RISING, LOOKS COMPASSIONATELY AT TENDERLOIN'S TOUGH STREETS
Eyes Upis a new documentary on the making of Baobab Rising, the monumental Precita Eyes mural at 350 Ellis St. (between Taylor and Jones) in the Tenderloin. The 15-minute video used drones to film the artistic team balanced on scaffolding suspended by ropes as they painted the top half of the 13-story building. The dizzying scenes alternate with thoughtful reflections from painters Monica Magtoto, Mel Waters, Malik Seneferu, Eli Lippert, and Precita Eyes founder Susan Cervantes. Completed in 2018, Baobab Risingwas designed by community members and celebrates the Tenderloin's legacy of African-American jazz, the struggles for LGBTQ rights, local Asian culture, and the neighborhood's low-income residents. Henry Dombey, Steve Agnos, and Matt Abrams of Clubsodapromade the film.
RAINS SWEEPS OUTDOOR POP-UP INSIDE
Precita Eye's pop-up mural for the bimonthly Paseo Artístico art stroll along 24th St. on March 11 was supposed to take place outside, but the weather had other ideas. Kerra Hendrickson designed the piece on theMujeres Keepers of Culture theme, and dozens of visitors stayed dry while painting it at an improvised work station inside the Precita Eyes studio.
