A Price On Your Head

John 11:45-57
~ Chris Goldman, Lead Pastor

What would it be like to have a price on your head? Most people would say, “I’m glad I’m not that important.” True, most of us aren’t. However, most people know the feeling, “They’re out to get me” or “They’re gunning for me.” In other words, most people know what it feels like to be under constant threat or pressure from someone else.

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many Jews began to follow this little-known Rabbi named Jesus. These new followers were from Judea and Jerusalem — the power center of their day. The established power structure in Israel began to take notice and discuss how to get rid of this new threat.

Why did Jesus present such a threat when he wanted neither power nor position? Well, as the gospels record, Jesus spoke “…as one who had authority.” And here’s something we know: Authoritarians are often threatened by organic authority. We use terms like “grassroots” or “movement” to describe leaders who rise through unconventional pathways. Jesus knew his power came from above and sought no earthly throne. Unfortunately, for Jesus, this meant having a price on his head…a death warrant issued to end his life.

As we near our Passover Seder (Good Friday, April 7) and Resurrection Sunday (April 9), we enter into the section of John often referred to as “The Book of Glory.” Jesus’ glory would require his death, burial, and resurrection. This season of Jesus’ life can mirror this season in our own lives as we move from darkness into light, from Winter to Spring. The question is if we will experience newness in our spiritual life as well.

I invite to come with us as we draw near to the passion of the Christ. See you Sunday!

Sunday Worship at 10:30 am

Volunteer Opportunities

1) Help with Ground -- Spring is approaching, which means time to start caring for the grounds. If you have time to help, contact Larry Rafferty or the church office.

2) Sunday Kitchen Clean-up --  This is about a 30-minute job on Sundays following services.  We always have the scones serving trays, communion trays, etc., that need to be washed each week.  If you can help, contact Donna Braxton or the church office.

3) Greeters -- As service continues to fill up, we seek additional greetings. Specifically, some who are willing to help people find seats on those crowded Sunday mornings.  If you can help, contact Donna Braxton or the church office.
