Top of the morning to you, incredible human who sometimes likes to move faster for longer than most of our species tend to appreciate 😅

Speaking of doing things a little differently, I want to share this quote with you:

"I would like to point out the importance of chasing your own dreams. You must live with whoever you become, and those around you have to live with that. It's important to be who you want to be, and not what others want you to be.”

– Nils van der Poel

As a parent, I reflect around what van der Poel, the inspiring Olympic and World Champion speed skater, is saying. A lot. Much more than what’s constructive. How do I impress upon my children the wisdom that he conveyed with merely three short sentences?

I don’t have a good answer. Not yet. So in the meantime, I’ve decided that the best I can do is to show them. And, truly, that is why I spend so much time running. Because I must live with whoever I become, and those around me must too.

And I would very much like that to be a guy who runs a bit. Not because he aspired to become a world champion, or participate in the Olympics. Because an important part of the lesson is that not all dreams are big. But small dreams–such as ones about running just a little bit faster than you thought you would ever do–are worth chasing too.

Too deep for a Friday morning? Alrighty, let’s get on to business then.

“The Vaporfly is my first pick on race day, and it is still the benchmark for when I try out new racing shoes. As such, it is only natural that the Metaspeed Sky+ have to be tested against the Vaporfly Next% 2.”

Look, I like running shoes. I like to read about them, and I like to watch Youtube videos about them. I like to look at them, hold them, and I like to run in them. And, much to my wife’s chagrin, I like to buy them.

Perhaps the best thing about having your own website about running, is that writing up exceptionally geeky and far too comprehensive test reports comparing two pairs of shoes is completely natural. More than that, it is also a justification for buying new running shoes. So when my wife asks, I tell her that I have to do it. Because I do it for you guys.

“Lying in the not-so-appealing middle is the marathon, the ultimate test of speed and endurance. An event that, if you’re really racing it, will challenge you in ways no other distance can replicate.”

Fellow newsletter writer Mario Fraioli (check out The Morning Shakeout if you don’t already subscribe) gets to the core of what makes the marathon the distance for many runners. More than that, he offers up some actionable advice on how to properly prepare yourself for the ultimate challenge of speed and endurance.

“A friend of mine thinks that my success is mostly based on me being a talent. That the training plan that devoured me wouldn’t give anyone else the same results. Perhaps he’s right, perhaps he’s not. I actually think that he is a little right and a little wrong. I like to think that I earned my success. I also wish for the sport to keep developing and for my records to be broken.”

You didn’t think that I would quote Nils van der Poel without sharing his now sorta famous document on how a crazy elite athlete at the top of his sport got there, did you? Well of course not.

While not running training–except for the fact that he does a lot of insane runs, anyways–this document detailing van der Poel’s training in the years leading up to his 2022 double Olympic victory is mandatory reading for anyone with an interest in endurance training. Much of what brought van der Poel to the top is contrary to conventional wisdom, and food for thought for distance runners as much as Poel’s fellow speed skaters.

🤣 Just for Laughs

A meme about running with music

Or even worse, when you’re running on the treadmill and the TV show you’re watching has sounds of crying children in the background.

And with that, I’m out. See you again in a week’s time!
