In and Around Adelphi Meeting

Glenn Riley Memorial Reception

We will gather on April 1 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the life of our dear Friend, Glenn Riley.

As is our custom, we will extend our celebration and fellowship with a reception following the meeting.  We need Friends to help make this happen by bringing finger foods. Please arrive at the memorial meeting a little early to drop off your contributions.  Also, please drop a quick email or text to Cheryl Morden (contact information in Breeze) to let us know that you will bring a gift of food.

The desire to reach hearts is wise and most possible.”

Calling All Egg Dyers

On Sunday, April 2nd, we will dye Easter eggs during potluck for the annual Easter Egg hunt on April 9th. We would be delighted to receive any white hard boiled eggs by April 2nd or dyed Easter eggs by April 9th for the occasion. Please bring hard boiled eggs in cartons labeled for the Easter Egg hunt and place them in the fridge. No plastic eggs please. Questions? Contact a member of the Children's Religious Education Committee or Jessica Arends. (Contact information for both are in Breeze.)

Friends Community School Weekly Bulletin

Angela Garcia writes of two women who have been role models in her life - her mother Doris Garcia and Betty Ann Workman - a trail-blazer in Quaker schools, and convener of a National Association of Independent Schools caucus of people of color teaching in independent schools.

The school is preparing for its various summer camps, and is hiring camp lead teachers and assistant counselors. And in other news, the fifth graders are learning animated art.  (When your editor was in 5th grade, "chapter books" were the big new things to explore.)

In its "Quaker Corner," the Bulletin offers a Quaker Speak video by J.E. McNeil, an FMW Friend, on "the secret to true communication" with people with opinions or cultures different from our own.  J.E. is proud to speak both NACAR and NPR.

Climate Corner

Climate Action Working Group

The Climate Action Working Group will be meeting twice this month: On March 21 from 7 - 8:30, to focus on action, and on March 28, (same time) to focus on education.  Both events are listed in the Breeze calendar, but please notice that the Zoom link for the 28th is different from the link for the 21st. All are welcome to join in with this vibrant and devoted group!

Is This Recyclable?

If recycling is a new (or re-emerging) discipline for you, you might have a few questions.  Back when the practice first showed up in elementary schools (and was brought home rather insistently to parents), there was paper, metal and plastic.  Now there are all kinds of variations, and no less than seven kinds of plastic! (Only #6 is bad.)

The Climate Action Group wants to encourage us all by offering some complete and clear information - for each of our nearest jurisdictions: Montgomery County, Prince Georges County, and D.C.  Apparently we are (collectively) making progress on recycling -- but we're less than half way to a goal of recycling all possible materials.

Women in Quaker History

Who was the first black woman elected legislator in the U.S.?

[Spoiler Alert:  It was Crystal Bird Fauset,
elected to the Pennsylvania legislature in 1938.]

Crystal Bird Fauset was an educator and a pioneer for race relations in the mid-1920s. On an American Friends Service Committee speaking tour, she spoke in more than 200 venues, urging white audiences to see and appreciate the dignity, wisdom and contributions of African Americans.  Read more about her background, her life,  and her international work here, in the folder. "Resources on Quakers."

Meet the "Golden Rule" - A Small Ship with a Big Mission

The Peace & Social Concerns Committee of Friends Meeting of Washington is supporting this project, and would appreciate your help!

Save the date -- April 5, 5:30 pm --for an event at at Friends Meeting of Washington, to welcome the crew and educate the community. (Adelphi attender, Madison Rose will be speaking too). They are also coordinating essential support service for the ship’s crew when they are in town. Please indicate on this form if you can offer help! They are especially in need of a boat slip or RV parking pad to borrow! Questions? Contact Madison Rose via Breeze.

Do You Know the Secret Handshakes?

(Hint: they've been revised)

Who’s Who and Who Are You?  How to find and share contact information within the Adelphi Community
  • To get a log-in to access Breeze (our online meeting directory), contact either Mackenzie Morgan or Reuben Snipper at webservent@adelphifriends.org (“webservent,” with an “e,” is correct.)

  • To sign up to receive Silent Announcements or to change the email address where you receive them: There's a small form on our webpage (www.AdelphiFriends.org), at the bottom left corner.  You can use that form to subscribe to Silent Announcements or change the address where the announcements go.

  • To edit your own entry in the Breeze directory, just look up your own name and click on the little pencil icon next to each section of information (e-mail, home address, etc.)

  • To find out who serves on various committees: In Breeze, click on tags and then choose "committees." You should find up-to-date lists there.

What’s Happening At/Around Adelphi Meeting?
  • To schedule something at Adelphi (for example, committee meeting on Zoom, 2nd hour, a room for an in-person meeting, space outside on the campus, etc.) send an email to schedule@adelphifriends.org.
You will need to provide the following information:
  • Title for event, such as 2nd Hour topic, name of committee, etc.
  • Purpose of event, if not clear from the title
  • Name of requester and contact information
  • “Location,” i.e., Zoom, in-person, or both. If in-person, what space you want to meet in (Library, Meeting Room, Memorial Garden, Social Hall, etc.)
  • Date and time when it starts and ends. If recurring, what dates or pattern, e.g. 2nd Thursday of the month
  • If Zoom meeting, will it be open to the public? If so, you may need a technical person to manage the waiting room, etc. Please let us know by mentioning this on your request.
  • Other information that would be helpful for us to help you with this
There's a team of people prepared to help schedule and support events in our very active community.  Depending on the type of event, different individuals may be involved in scheduling. How will you know whether your request was “approved”?  We will get back to you with a confirmation and you will then find the info for your event on the Breeze/Events calendar.
  • To find the Zoom link for a scheduled meeting:  Go to Breeze at this link, and click on “Events.”  The Zoom info should be there.

  • For events at Adelphi, schedule the event first (see “How to Schedule Something at Adelphi" --  above).”  Once you have done that, your event will be on the calendar with date, time and place.

  • To announce your event in Silent Announcements:  Schedule it first (see steps above), then send an email to the Silent Announcements editor (a.k.a. Ruth Flower) at her address in Breeze -- about your event or a non-event.  Silent Announcements are prepared on Friday and Tuesday mornings. To ensure that your announcement gets published (not lost), please put [SA] or just SA at the beginning of your subject line.

Want to help, get to know people, make this your meeting?
  • Keep an eye on opportunities to meet with others in the community as we learn more together – about Quakerism, about our community and the world around us. These will usually be described in Silent Announcements, our bi-weekly news.

  • To join in the work of a committee – a great way to get to know people - contact the Nominating Committee, through one of the committee’s members listed on the “committees” tag in Breeze

  • Provide financial support for Adelphi’s work and worship together.  If you are able, donate to support the Meeting’s budget, which includes everything from building upkeep to support for members and families and families in our broader community, to “mini-reparations” as we begin to acknowledge how the development of Quakerism on this continent are tied to the development and continuation of racism.

You can donate by sending a check to the Adelphi Meeting Treasurer, 2303 Metzerott Rd., Adelphi, MD 20783. Or donate securely on our website – either a one-time donation or a monthly/ quarterly pledge. To make or change a pledge to support renovations of the meetinghouse, click here.

  • Advocate with others on an issue you are concerned about. Sign up here for the “Couch Potato Activists’” list serve and report your activities here.
