  • New book release "A Year in the Capital".

  • Exhibition and book 'The Riddles of Ukiyo-e' at the SieboldHuis.

Dear Japanese Art Enthusiast,

After all the hustle and bustle associated with the start of the new exhibition in the SieboldHuis and the successful SJA symposium, peace has now returned for the time being. I was able to visit Japan in January and will go there once again in May.

Meanwhile we are gradually adding new acquisitions to our website, and you are invited to take a look. Please contact us if you are interested in one of the items.
New book release "A Year in the Capital".

Recently a nice small book was published by Uhlenbeck Uitgevers, a new company in which I publish small books of texts that are too important not to be published, but are too small to be of interest to the large commercial publishers.

This is a commented version of a mid-18th century book by Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1750)

You can order the book by sending us an email: ukiyoe@xs4all.nl.
Sinologist/Japanologist Henri Kerlen offers a translation of and commentary on Ehon miyako zöshi (An Illustrated Booklet about the Capital), an ehon (picture book) created by Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1750) and published in Kyoto by Kikuya Kihei in 1746. The book provides a selection of the most important activities and festivities that took place annually in Kyoto, some of which are still celebrated today. It gives an idea of what life was like in the imperial city for townsfolk of slightly above average wealth and status during the early to mid-18th century.

The Year in the Capital is one of Sukenobu's lesser-known productions, but it offers a representative example of his work as a book illustrator and ukiyo-e artist. The Japanese calligraphed text is shown in Kanji and romaji, together with a translation and extensive commentary in English.
