A Message from Mike Shannon, Interim Executive Vice President

Administration and Finance

Good Afternoon,

Mike ShannonI hope it has been a good week for you and you were able to soak in the beauty of this early spring season. This is one of my favorite times of the year to be out and about on campus and is one of the many perks of working on a college campus like Georgia Tech. It is also the time of year when the end of the semester doesn’t feel too distant. Nevertheless, it’s a busy time of the year for everyone at Georgia Tech and can be quite stressful. Please be sure to take care of yourself and the well-being of others in the community – especially our students, who are our top priority at Georgia Tech. Take a break, take a walk, and enjoy this extraordinary place.

One way staff can support students is volunteering to become a GT 1000 (First-Year Seminar)/2000 (Transfer Seminar) instructor. For many years, GT 1000/2000 has facilitated students’ successful transition to campus and is a great way to connect with and support our students, meet other campus partners, and continue developing professionally. I have been an instructor for the past few years, and I absolutely love it. It is a tremendous opportunity to lean into the lives of our newest and youngest students coming to our campus for the first time. This is a critical moment in their Georgia Tech experience, and you can be a role model for them. A&F has a lot to offer these students, and I encourage you to learn more about becoming an instructor. Online applications are due next Friday, March 17, and there will be a virtual information session on Monday, March 13, at 3:30 p.m.

I also encourage you to attend next week’s A&F Virtual Town Hall featuring members from the Comprehensive Campus Plan team who will share the progress of this planning effort including draft recommendations. These recommendations will provide the roadmap for campus development over the next ten years. We are nearing the finish line and need everyone’s voice in this process. The town hall will be held on Friday, March 17, from 2 to 3 p.m. Click here to attend via Zoom. You can also download the calendar invite.

In celebrations this week, it was exciting to attend the dedication of the Reck Garage. This was an incredible journey and the results are truly magnificent. I appreciate all of the hard work from the A&F team who made this project a reality. This facility is a big deal and, as a proud double Jacket, let me say job well done!

I would also like for you to join me in celebrating the history of women at Georgia Tech – staff, faculty, and Alumnae. It’s been 70 years since women began enrolling at Tech and, today, more women engineers graduate from Georgia Tech than any other program in the nation. This spring, construction will begin on an art installation in the center of campus that celebrates and honors women’s accomplishments and contributions to the Institute and to a wide range of fields in which they have made an impact. This project is truly inspirational and represents the Institute’s commitment to women. Please stay tuned as this project comes to life.

I hope you all enjoy the weekend. Please don’t hesitate to let me know how I can be helpful to you and your teams. Take care and thank you for all you do!

All my best,
Mike Shannon's Signature

Hundreds of hexagonal mosaics will tell the stories of women who graduated from Georgia Tech, forming a collective constellation across the campus treeline.
