Antrim Eclectic Book Club

Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Paul Doiron is the best-selling author of the Mike Bowditch series of crime novels set in the Maine woods. His first book, The Poacher’s Son, won the Barry Award and the Strand Critics Award and was nominated for an Edgar for Best First Novel. His second, Trespasser, won the 2012 Maine Literary Award. His novelette “Rabid” was a finalist for the 2019 Edgar in the Best Short Story category. Paul’s twelfth book, Dead by Dawn won the New England Society’s 2022 Book Award for Fiction, as well as his second Maine Literary Award. It was also a finalist for the Barry Award. His books have been translated into 11 languages. Paul is the former chair of the Maine Humanities Council, Editor Emeritus of Down East: The Magazine of Maine, and a Registered Maine Guide specializing in fly fishing.

This event is open to the public but seating is limited, so advance registration is required. We will have books available for purchase and signing courtesy of Toadstool Bookstore. 20% of all sales will benefit the public libraries.

Fostering Community Conversations on Racial Justice

April:

The group will be meeting on Zoom on Thursday April 27th, 6:30-8 pm. Note that the April meeting will be on the fourth Thursday. We will finish our discussion of Candacy Taylor's book Overground Railroad about the Green Book, a guide to Black travelers published from 1936-1967.

We will also begin our next book, Our Nig by Harriet E. Wilson, reissued in 2011 with an introduction by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and RIchard J. Ellis. We will read and discuss the Introduction by Gates and Ellis for our April conversation. First published in 1859, Our Nig is an autobiographical narrative, thinly disguised as a novel. The work provides an important look at the life of a Black woman in the antebellum North. Ms. Wilson lived in New Hampshire for her entire life, from 1825-1900.

May:

On May 18th (the 3rd Thursday) the group will continue our conversation about Wilson's book by reading the actual text that she wrote and published in 1859. We are also planning a field trip on Saturday, May 20th, to Milford NH, where WIlson lived and where the Black Heritage Trail is dedicating a new marker to her as part of acknowledging the lives of Black people in NH. Details about this event have not been finalized, so stay tuned for more information!

Curbside Pickup: Please call 588-6786, reserve through our catalog, or email tuttlelib@yahoo.com to request items from the Library. You will be alerted with a text, email or phone call when your item is ready for pick up during our normal operating hours.
Pickup Procedure: You can walk in and pick up your book on the hold cart at the back entrance or give us a call at 588-6786 and we will bring your items out to your car.

HOURS:

Monday & Wednesday 2:00 – 6:00pm.
Tuesday & Thursday 2:00 – 8:00pm.
Friday & Saturday 10:00 – 4:00pm.

In case of inclement weather, closings will be posted on
Facebook, Instagram, & WMUR.
If the weather is bad, we're always glad to extend your due dates!
