HIKING TRAIL CLEAN UP
HI HIKERS
Rather than hiking the Henning Conservation Area next Monday, I'm going to send out an event to hike the Haddock Lane Trail. It received the 2019 Trail of the Year award from the Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association. The volunteers in the previous Holiday Island Hiking Club built this trail. We'll plan to meet at 10:00 am at the Trailhead on Haddock Lane.
I want commend Dan Kees for organizing the maintenance event this morning and all of the volunteers that showed up to help remediate much of the damage that took place over the last two years.
With the rain, snow and winds that have taken places, a couple very large trees came down over the trail and quite a number of smaller trees. This rendered the trail essentially unusable. There are still a couple of areas that are passable but have been damaged due to washouts. There is also a significant landslide that has rendered a portion of the trail impassable.
The volunteers today had up to 6 chainsaws running at one time to clear the trail while another group laid in new stairs. Several of the logs cut were so big, the trees had to be cut from both sides due to the large diameter. It took several people with pry bars to move them off the trail.
We carried the chain saws and the pry bars the entire 2 miles that were cleared. needless to say my back and feet hurt and I lost 6 pound of water weight in the endeavor. This was good for my weight loss plan. I hope I'm not a wimp and everyone else was dragging as much as me.
With the closing of the driving range, we'll be able to reroute the trail through the driving range and bypass the landslide.
I hope you'll join us on Monday. It is of moderate difficulty.
