NEXT REHEARSAL MONDAY, MARCH 13, 7-9 PM, IN THE BAND ROOM AT HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL.

These are exciting times for UVCB.  At our most recent rehearsal we added challenging, fun new repertoire; and welcomed our new Assistant Music Director, our own Dom DeFrancisco; and added two new members: Stephanie Pope in the clarinet section, and Grace Shaw on horn.  I know you’ll do everything to make the newbies feel at home

We’ll be sight reading more new music at Monday’s rehearsal.  (See Mark Nelson’s note below.)  We’ve added new dates to the summer schedule.  (See Mark Nunlist’s words below.)  And our door remains open for new musicians to join us as we rehearse for our spring concert in mid-June, date TBD.  If you know a potential recruit, please invite her/him.  Or contact your UVCB Membership Coordinator:  <Tom.McNeil.VT@gmail.com>

For those new to rehearsals at HHS:  Parking is available along Lebanon St., or in a parking lot just off the street.  Enter through the main door, near the flag pole.  Go straight through the lobby to the stairway up to the second floor, or take the nearby elevator.  Chairs and music stands are abundant in the Band Room.

OPENING FOR UVCB SECRETARY

Laura Rubinson, UVCB’s current Secretary will be leaving for Washington state in a few weeks.  So the Board is seeking a replacement.  The position’s primary responsibility is to record notes of Board meetings, about once or twice a month for an hour or so, usually via Zoom.  The Secretary is a voting member of the Board.  The position is filled by election at the Band’s annual meeting in October.  The Bylaws provide that the Board may fill the vacant position by appointment.  Self nominations are appropriate and encouraged!

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Greetings, UVCB,

I have added one more piece to our current repertoire – “Sweet Horn Rag,” which features our flourishing French horn section.  Please download and print a copy of your part if you can; we will have hard copies at Monday’s rehearsal.
(Here is a link to our Spring 2023 Repertoire folder.)

This Monday, we will work on the following:

Kirkpatrick Fanfare
Shenandoah
Sweet Horn Rag
Symphonic Dance No. 3

Dom and I look forward to seeing you on Monday evening.

warm regards,
Mark

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings, UVCB,

Last Monday, we welcomed Dom DeFrancisco as an Associate Director as we prepare for the temporary absence of Mark Nelson in late spring.  We had a spirited rehearsal of great music.  I find his suggestion to listen to recordings of the pieces to be sound advice (no pun intended); we can look forward to including this music in our summer performances.

On the subject of performances, we are now committed to return to the Marion Cross Gazebo in Norwich for a Memorial Day observance on Sunday, May 28th (noon), and to play in the Orford - Fairlee July 4th parade (which was an extraordinarily large and well-attended parade last year).  Both these engagements - as well as others on our growing calendar - are listed on our UVCB Member Availability page on the Band’s Google drive at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NXwAqzO0V_XHklYu0kF8TkhXjKy0UzgsV56LbHyr9aM/edit#gid=0.   Please review that page periodically to indicate your availability to participate.

Our list of upcoming performances is growing.  These gigs are always enjoyable and are currently the Band’s sole means of fund-raising.  If you receive a request for the UVCB to perform, please remember to funnel that request to Jordan Engel (jengel55@comcast.net) as our UVCB Business Manager so that we avoid inadvertently committing to perform in different locales on the same day.   Also, if you’re aware of a “traditional engagement” in the Band’s recent history that you think may recur this summer, please let Jordan know so he remains aware of the totality of our engagements, potential or committed.

For your entertainment and education, here’s a link to a YouTube clip of the Symphonic Dance #3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qgfHYzYilU  There are many, but I find it helps me to see the score of what other musicians are playing while listening to the piece.

Thank you all,
Mark
