New Poll Shows Voters Overwhelmingly Support Arizona's Outdoor Recreation Economy

In December, a multi-modal survey from TargetSmart engaged adults registered to vote in the state of Arizona to assess top priorities within the Grand Canyon State. Over 800 individuals participated via phone, text and online platforms to share their thoughts on policy priorities relating to our economy, environment, border issues, healthcare, education, partisanship and more. The poll has a credibility interval of +/- 3.5%.

Some key findings related to the Arizona Trail and Arizona's outdoor recreation economy include:
  • 89% support funding and legislation to protect the Arizona National Scenic Trail
  • 84% support measures by the State to prioritize access, funding and acquisition of public lands for parks, trails and wildlife habitat to bolster our outdoor recreation economy.
  • 83% support permanently restoring funding for the Arizona State Parks Heritage Fund
  • 71% support conserving at least 30% of US lands, freshwater and oceans by 2030
  • 70% support Arizona receiving federal infrastructure funding to address the climate crisis and build more renewable energy, invest in water and drought resiliency, reduce carbon pollution, support energy efficiency, and improve rural energy reliability.
When you communicate with your elected state representatives, please remind them about the issues that mean the most to you.

Rim to River Explores the History of Arizona, Written While Thru-Hiking the Arizona Trail

Tom Zoellner walked across the length of Arizona to come to terms with his home state. But the trip revealed more mountains behind the mountains.

Rim to River - Looking into the Heart of Arizona is the story of this extraordinary journey through redrock country, down canyons, up mesas, and across desert plains to the obscure valley in Mexico that gave the state its enigmatic name. The trek is interspersed with incisive essays that pick apart the distinctive cultural landscape of Arizona: the wine-colored pinnacles and complex spirituality of Navajoland, the mind-numbing stucco suburbs, desperate border crossings, legislative skullduggery, extreme politics, billion-dollar copper ventures, dehydrating rivers, retirement kingdoms, old-time foodways, ghosts of old wars, honky-tonk dreamers, murder mysteries, and magical Grand Canyon reveries.

In this new book, Zoellner paints an enduring portrait of a misunderstood American state. It's an indictment, a love letter, and a homecoming story all at once.

His book is available through University of Arizona Press.

Will You Volunteer to Help Maintain the AZT This Season?

Springtime is the absolute best season to to be out on the Arizona Trail. That's why we're providing ample opportunities to help maintain and improve this amazing pathway from Mexico to Utah. It takes a village to care for the AZT, and we welcome you to be part of that village.

Check out the volunteer events on our Calendar, and then dig deeper into the details through our Volunteer page. No matter which part of state you live in, there are great things happening every weekend, and we need your help. In addition to participating in meaningful volunteer work that will deepen your connection to the AZT and the landscapes it traverses, you'll also meet the nicest people.

If swinging a pick mattock, building drains, or moving rocks isn't your cup of joe -- no worries! We always need help at outreach booths, trail running events, sharpening tools, support within our office in Tucson, and much more. The Arizona Trail Association relies on our generous community of friends throughout the year and we hope you can commit at least one day this season to give back to the trail that provides so much joy to hikers, runners, mountain bikers, equestrians, and everyone who enjoys time in nature.

We hope to see you on the trail (as a volunteer) this season.
