Tools for environmental journalism

Hello and a big welcome to our new subscribers from The New York Times, The Independent, Global Investigative Journalism Network, MVPR, and many others.

Newsrooms are far past the point where climate and environment were niche stories.

“Environmental journalism is, without a doubt, one of the most important strands of contemporary journalism”, The Fix’s contributor Alberto Puliafito writes. As the climate crisis progresses, the topic becomes more and more interesting to the global audience, in part because more people are directly witnessing the impact of climate change.

Telling this story while balancing both the local context and the global perspective is difficult. Fortunately, there are tools and techniques that make it possible.

Last week The Fix concluded a free three-part guide to environmental journalism by Puliafito. Frankly, some of this advice is applicable to any other field of journalism. There are, however, online databases and other tools that are specifically useful for reporting on the environment – such as Global Forest Watch or the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service in Europe.

To learn how to approach and use them in the most useful way possible, read the full guide on The Fix’s website.

What we are following

GhatGPT has been in the news for months now, but in recent weeks we’ve seen more examples of how newsrooms are actually integrating generative AI in their workflows. American tech magazine Wired formulated its AI policy, and UK publisher Reach published its first articles written using artificial intelligence.

Women are still significantly underrepresented in newsroom leadership. The Reuters Institute analysed 240 outlets in 12 markets and found that 22% of the 180 top editors are women; by comparison, 40% of journalists in these countries are women. Full results are available in the think tank’s 2023 report on women and leadership in the news media.

Industry news

The Financial Times launched FT Edit, its app that offers access to a daily selection of eight articles for a fraction of the normal subscription, in the United States. The product, which aims to attract new readers who can’t afford a (relatively expensive) full subscription, was first launched in the UK early last year. The product is free for the first month, then rising to $0.99 monthly for six months and to $4.99 per month after that. The model offers readers a finite product that can be read from start to finish, as opposed to social media. FT recruited Caryn Wilson, formerly an editor at The New York Times, to lead FT Edit in the United States.
Mass protests erupted in Georgia last week over a controversial “foreign agent” bill that could, among other issues, worsen media freedom in the country. The bill, which critics say had been modelled on the infamous Russian law targeting alleged “foreign agents”, was passed in the parliament thanks to the support of the ruling Georgian Dream party but eventually recalled in the wake of the backlash. Multiple Georgia’s independent media outlets and press freedom watchdogs renounced the bill. “[The bill's passing] follows an ongoing assault on the media and civil society, with instances ranging from targeted physical violence to smear campaigns”, Mariam Gogosashvili, executive director of the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics, told the International Press Institute.
Reach, one of the UK’s largest newspaper publishers that operates outlets like the Daily Express and Daily Mirror, posted its yearly results for 2022, showing a decrease in revenue and profit year-on-year driven by rising newsprint costs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as by an advertising market downturn. The company brought £601.4 million (€675 million) in revenue in the past year, a 2.3% decrease compared to 2021. Profit fell by 27.4% to £106.1 million (€119.1 million). The company says it expects growth in 2023 “from expansion of audience and data-led engagement.”
