Dear Friends of Poetry Center San José,

Calling all performers! Poetry, hip hop, and musical theater artists! We are looking for the county's next Youth Poet Laureate! Application portal is open until March 31st. Winner(s) will be announced in April 2023. To submit an application, visit: https://bit.ly/3FioAGI.
Applicants must
  • be a Santa Clara County resident (do not have to be a citizen);
  • be between the ages of 13 and 18 as of February 3rd, 2023;
  • be available to serve as Laureate for program year June 2023 - June 2024;
  • be living locally through the program year;
  • not be enrolled in college full-time during the program year.
Submit this completed application with thoughtful responses; we recommend you keep your answers on a separate document before you finalize and share them.

Santa Clara County Youth Poet Laureate Program also announces five workshops for youth ages 13-18 years. All workshops are free via Zoom!

Charmina “Mia” Rios (she/her) is a 21 year old Filipina from San Jose, CA, and is currently studying Psychology as well as minoring in Music, Sociology, Child & Youth Studies, and Public Service & Community Engagement at the University of San Francisco, in hopes of becoming a social worker. Based on her writing work and spoken word experience, you can find her involvement with the BIPOC/LGBTQIA+ magazine Marías at Sampaguitas/Sampaguita Press publication. Aside from poetry and spoken word, she also enjoys writing songs, making music, and taking passion in advocacy work for the community, especially in her intern experience at South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), Filipino Community Development Corporation (FCDC), Children's After School Arts (CASA) at Rooftop School, and as a leader through her Bay Area AAPI grassroots organization Triple A Movement. Angelica Flores is a poet, writer, storyteller, and blogger from Stockton, CA. Her work has been published in Joaquin Magazine, The Collegian Newspaper, Exist(ir), Hispanecdotes, Scran Press and more. She has also performed her poetry in multiple venues in the Central Valley, Sacramento, and Monterey County. Angelica has written social justice curriculum for non-profits and is a mental health advocate. She believes that healing is possible through storytelling and poetry.

Maria Bolaños (she/they) is a Filipina American poet, book reviewer, and co-Founder and Publisher of Sampaguita Press. Her poems were nominated for Best of the Net in 2021 and 2022, and their writing has been featured in various US and international publications. Writing Multilingual Poetry -
Have you ever found that there are some ideas you can't just express in English? Writing multilingual poetry can give you the opportunity to speak with your clearest, freest voice. In this workshop, Butch will take you through the what, why, and how of multilingual poetry and you'll have an opportunity to generate your own!

Joseph ‘Butch’ Schwarzkopf Jr. (he/him) is an Illawarra (Dharawal Country) based Filipinx poet and filmmaker. His debut chapbook, Pagong Cannot Climb Trees was published by Sampaguita Press in 2022. He has performed as a poet at events such as Outspoken Poetics, Unspoken Words festival, and The Digital Sala’s Tula for Typhoon Relief. His works have been published in the UTS Writers’ Anthology, UNSWeetened Literary Journal, Australian Poetry Anthology, Mascara literary journal, and Marias at Sampaguitas literary magazine. His favorite word is pie.

Workshop synopsis: What do you want to fight for? In this generative writing workshop, Sofía Aguilar will faciliate a group-led reading and discussion of three political poetry poems from revolutionary thinkers and writers, then offer a series of questions as prompts to create their own political poem, with an optional opportunity for sharing. Attendees will learn how to use and identify strategies for using poetry as a medium for social justice, call to action, community empowerment, protest against injustice, resistance to oppression, and meaningful change. This will be a free workshop for writers of any level with an emphasis on youth attendance, and will close the workshop schedule to encourage youth to apply to our SCC YPLP application. 


Sofía Aguilar is a Chicana writer and editor based on the traditional homelands of the Tongva and Chumash peoples, now known as Los Angeles, California. Her work has appeared in Los Angeles Times, Refinery29 Somos, and New Orleans Review, among other publications. As an alum of WriteGirl and a first-generation college graduate, Sofía earned a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, where she received the Andrea Klein Willison Prize for Poetry and the Spencer Barnett Memorial Prize for Excellence in Latin American and Latinx Studies. She is currently a 2023 Mentee in the Latinx in Publishing Writers Mentorship Program and has published two poetry chapbooks, STREAMING SERVICE: golden shovels made for tv and its sequel STREAMING SERVICE: season two

Over the past four decades, PCSJ has brought hundreds of exceptional writers from around the country to read from their works and, in many cases, to conduct workshops for local writers. PCSJ is a nonprofit organization established in 1978.
