Parenting

Parenting Journey will be starting our next class, April 6th!

What is Parenting Journey?

-12 week course, with emphasis on looking into your own childhood, how you were raise, and how that effects how you raise your children.

-We have onsite childcare during class.

-We start each week with a family style meal all together.

-Through the Journey, we explore how to become #chainbreakerparents while building community with our peers.

What PJ(Parenting Journey) is not:

-a drop in class that you can come and go as you please. We ask that you commit to all 12 weeks.

-a behavior modification class to address child behaviors. (I know a couple great ones, that I can refer you to, however!)

Contact Deidra Delgado at 360-477-2154 to get on the list.

How much screen time should kids get? – Active For Life

Just the other day, our big television screen stopped working. No shapes or colours danced across its surface. It loomed silently over us every time we walked through the living room. At first my kids were in denial. They tried every strategy to resurrect the large screen, but no luck. When I declared it was truly broken, my kids were angry. How dare the TV die! They asked me to buy them a new one, and I said no. They asked me to fix it, and I said I’d look into it. I caught them sitting on the couch staring despondently at the black television. My toddler kept running into the living room yelling “Show-show! Oh nooooo!” and bursting into tears. The whole situation was comical and eye-opening. In the end, the TV did get fixed and those long three days without our big screen TV taught me a few things about screens and kids.

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. School-Age

Parent Tips and more…

Read to little kids and big kids.

It's cozy reading to little ones on your lap, cuddling next to you, or falling asleep in bed as you enjoy picture books together. Children will remember the closeness as well as the story. And many kids still enjoy read-alouds well after they learn to read on their own. They benefit from hearing the rhythm of the language, learning correct pronunciation, asking questions, and getting to relax and just take in the story.

50 Books All Kids Should Read Before They're 12

From picture books to graphic novels, fantasy to family fun, these must-read books have the power to hook kids of any gender. Some are cultural touchstones that belong in every kid's library. Others open kids' minds to cultures beyond their own. And some are recent releases that have the timeless quality of classics -- the kind that get handed down to siblings and passed around classrooms. Whether you have a reluctant reader or a budding bookworm, consider these surefire, kid-tested titles. (We've included a few rated best for 12 and up for the precocious readers out there!) For more great picks, check out our Best Book Series and Best Book Series for Early Readers.

Map Activities for Kids! >>

Exploring maps, even casually, helps kids develop an understanding of their place in the world, as well as strengthen spatial reasoning skills. And learning about how maps work doesn't have to be hard, as these fun map activities for kids demonstrate. Click link or image to see map activities for preschool and elementary age kiddos.
