Dear Whirlie Nation!

I have to admit that sometimes it is a struggle to decide what to write about each week. This week, not so much, so I will do my best not to overload you with information.

I am in the unique situation that not only am I a Grimsley parent, I am also a staff member.  In light of the events that happened on Friday, I have to say that I am extremely proud of how quickly our campus responded to a situation that turned out to be a prank.  It is unfortunate that this type of thing has become more frequent in schools.  School safety is our top priority, and we are fortunate that Mr. O'Donnell is always transparent with his communication.

On March 20th , our PTSA will be hosting a Townhall for Grimsley families called Supporting Healthy Teens & Families: A Town Hall on Teen Drug Trends and Prevention from 6:30 – 7:30 in the Media Center.  We hope both students & parents can join us for this important event. Thank you to Palmer McIntyre and Kelly Graves for organizing this event.  There will be a panel that has experience from an EMS, parent, and student aspect.  Educational materials will also be provided. This is a heavy subject, but it is extremely important to educate yourself in case it is something you may be living with or a witness to drug use.

This week, as a school, we will be recognizing "Say Something Week".   We are fortunate to have an Admin Team, SRO, and Staff members that listen and support each other, especially students and parents who report concerns they may have.  Say Something Week reinforces the power students have to prevent tragedies and encourages us to Say Something to a trusted adult to protect a friend from hurting themselves or others.  Each day this week we will highlight reasons why it is important to Say Something.

On a lighter note, I would like to highlight one way our Whirlie Way funds are being used to impact our own Grimsley students globally.  Heather Ellington, one of our fabulous Art teachers applied for a PTSA Departmental Grant to help fund a project called The Memory Project.  Please click the link from Fox 8 News to learn more about how this project impacted our students.

This Monday, March 13th, we will be hosting our monthly meeting in the Media Center at 5:30.  As you have heard me say before, I truly believe parent involvement is an important part of the equation to what makes a school successful.  I hope you can join us to see how we are partnering with our Parents, Staff, and Students to make Grimsley High School the best school in Guilford County.

We Are Whirlie Nation!

Diane Creech
Grimsley High School PTSA President

See Something Say Something Week - March 13th - 17th: Grimsley High School will be celebrating See Something, Say Something Week. This Week reinforces the power students have to prevent tragedies and encourages us to Say Something to a trusted adult to protect a friend from hurting themselves or others.  Each day this week during the announcements, we will address why it is important for students to have open communication with a trusted adult to help when they see or know of a situation that needs to be addressed.  Please encourage your students if they see something, they should say something.

Senior Updates from Mrs. Whiting
Seniors and Parents,
We are embarking on the busiest time of the school year for seniors.  Please make note of the updated dates here.  Consult the PINK sheet from earlier this year for more specific details concerning dress codes for the events.

A cap and gown is REQUIRED for participation in graduation.  If you know you haven’t yet taken care of your cap and gown and are planning to participate in the June 9 ceremony, you’ll need to do one of the following:
  • Order at www.highschool.herffjones.com  ASAP.  Shipping costs are increasing, and orders placed after Jan 31 have no guarantees to be here on time for graduation.
  • If you are using a sibling/cousin/neighbor’s cap and gown, you need to let me know what year it was used AND bring me $45 to cover the cost of the dated tassel, stole, and diploma cover.  These are required to participate.
  • If you are not planning to participate in the ceremony, you need to let Mrs. Whiting and your counselor know ASAP.

Balances must have been paid by MARCH 1 for delivery on time.  You can pay online at highschool.herffjones.com.  You should have your receipt, either the paper copy or an email if you ordered online and can verify your order number and balance owed.

Questions should be directed to Mrs. Whiting via remind or email (whitint@gcsnc.com).  DO NOT INTERRUPT HER CLASSES WITH YOUR QUESTIONS.

IMPORTANT INFO
If you are planning to use a cap and gown from a previous Grimsley graduation, you MUST notify Mrs. Whiting ASAP (whitint@gcsnc.com) with the year of the graduation to ensure the color will match. Herff Jones does change dye lots periodically.  You will need to purchase the dated stole, tassel, and diploma cover for graduation.  The fee is $45.  You can bring that in the form of a check made payable to Herff Jones to Mrs. Whiting (room 413).  Be sure to include the name of the graduate with the payment.  If you choose to make the payment online when online ordering is available, you still MUST let Mrs. Whiting know you are using a previous year’s cap and gown.  There is an additional shipping fee if you order online.   After January 1, Herff Jones will NOT accept personal checks.  Payments made after Jan 1 MUST be by credit card, cash, or money order.

Please do NOT purchase a cap and gown from another vendor.  The colors will not match the dye lot used by Herff Jones and you will be without a usable cap and gown for our graduation.

If you are not sure if you will graduate in June, it is better to go ahead and purchase the cap and gown unit in November to incur the minimal shipping costs.  If it is determined that you will not be participating in graduation in June, the cap and gown can be returned, unopened, for a refund of the cost of the cap and gown.  The shipping fees CANNOT be refunded.  Shipping fees increase dramatically the closer we get to graduation.
