Last week, a recap: Monday I introduced a resolution to recognize DC statehood; there was a hearing to pass the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act; Monday night was Purim and I heard the megillah being read at Temple Emanu El. Tuesday I went to thekickoff for the effort to raise the RI Works amount in RI(welfare benefits); met the former Speaker of the Colorado House, Terrance Carroll, and introduced him from the Floor; right after I shared with my colleagues a little about the Purim story (you can watch here starting at 21:00). I also went toorientation for parents and kids at Classical High School. Wednesday the Education Committee met, and I also had hearings on Ranked Choice Voting for presidential preference primaries and for an interstate licensing compact for physician assistants. Thursday I had five bills up for hearing - confirmatory adoption, resolution to ratify constitutional amendment on child labor, rules of the road for bicycles, green buildings and transition fromgas powered lawn equipment. Friday I slept! No, not really. I caught up on work and had a bunch of meetings.
This week is less busy. Tuesday there is a press conference on a package of equity statement bills at three and then a hearing on a bill I have that would ask legislators to attach anequity impact statementto our proposed bills. We should bring awareness of the equity impact of our legislation and this would get us talking about it. Thursday I have two juvenile justice bills up for hearing: one that will ensure that people under 18 arenot interrogated without a parentor guardian present, and one that would clarify that juveniles under 14 may not be detainedat the Training School.
Here is the complete listing of committee calendars for next week; information about how to testify in writing is at the bottom of each agenda. To testify in person, show up and sign in with the committee clerk or on the papers outside the hearing room (and be ready for a long night - bring snacks!).
