BRIGHTER FUTURES: Building Youth Resistance to Crime in Edo & Bayelsa States.
With our unique approach of building youth resistance to crime, ANEEJ continues to take conspicuous strides towards crime prevention in southern Nigeria focusing on Edo and Bayelsa States. ANEEJ in collaboration with TAG International with support from the UK Home office, launched the second intervention phase of the Brighter Futures project in Ogua community of Ikpoba-Okha LGA and Ogunmwenyen community of Oredo LGA, Edo State. The second phase focuses on "building youth resistance to crime through communal and shared responsibility" and "Increasing teamwork to combat crime" in Edo State. To accomplish this, we engaged the youths of the Ogua and Ogunmwenyen communities in a series of training sessions focused on the five vulnerability pillars, which were designed to increase their critical thinking capacity, build their sense of opportunity, strengthen their social network, develop self-confidence, and improve their perception of masculinity.
In furtherance of the project's goal, we also commenced the 2nd phase of the Brighter Futures project in Amarata Community of Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa with a sensitization meeting with the Community, youth groups and Intervention partners. Following this, we also had an Introductory session on the project's focus in St Judes Girls Secondary school, Bayelsa where we engaged over 300 students. Our Project team in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) introduced the SOC Prevent approach while sensitising them to the dangers of cultism and substance abuse.
