FDA to Wind Down COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Policies

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will end 22 COVID-19-related policies when the public health emergency (PHE) ends May 11 and allow 22 to continue for 180 days, including temporary policies for outsourcing facilities compounding certain drugs for hospitalized patients and non-standard personal protective equipment practices for sterile compounders not registered as outsourcing facilities. FDA plans to retain 24 COVID-19-related policies with “appropriate changes” and four whose duration is not tied to the PHE, including its recently revised policy for COVID-19 tests

Biden Budget Plan Outlines Health Priorities

President Joe Biden's budget proposal for fiscal 2024 may lack major new health care initiatives, but his policy agenda includes numerous items that would affect providers, health insurance companies and patients. The Biden administration released details of the president's plans, which touch on Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program, the health insurance exchanges, prescription drug prices, mental health care, HIV/AIDS, cancer and other issues.

New Advanced Planning Solution Available

CRISP DC launched a new cloud-based advance care planning solution to all District providers at no cost. The benefits of accessing MyDirectives for Clinicians include an user-friendly platform integrated in the CRISP DC HIE and the ability to create, upload and view new digital advance care planning forms as required across all patient care teams with access to the DC HIE. Users can now scan and upload existing advance care planning documents; display forms in the DC HIE anytime and anywhere across the continuum of care; and ensure other care teams, such as ambulatory providers and DC Fire and EMS responders, can access the information to honor the patient’s care decisions. There are two webinar dates remaining to answer questions and demonstrate this new solution.

Top 10 Patient Safety Concerns

Pediatric mental health, violence against clinicians and uncertainty around reproductive care are among the most pressing issues for health system leadership to address this year, according to ECRI’s 2023 list of top 10 patient safety concerns. Gone from the list is last year's top concern—understaffing. Also missing are past themes of inequity and racism in health care, disjointed telehealth workflows and emergency preparedness. The list stems from recent studies, patient safety databases and in-depth conversations with stakeholders.

An Innovative Training for Maternal Health Champions in Hospitals and Health Systems, Apply by March 31
The National Partnership for Women & Families is hosting a virtual training workshop, April 25 from 11 am to 7 pm, to support maternal and infant health equity champions within health care provider institutions to elevate their effectiveness and supercharge their organizations' efforts to improve maternal health. The training will equip attendees with the knowledge and tools to strengthen systems of leadership and clinical practice in the service of achieving maternal health equity. The training will provide an opportunity to identify priorities and solutions tailored to each organization with the help of national experts and peer maternal health champions. Health care staff committed to health equity and maternal health must apply for this full-day, compensated virtual workshop. Call for applications will close on March 31.

The Patient Safety & Quality Poster Competition is organized to encourage hospitals and health care providers to present their original work. All winning abstracts will be presented during the annual Patient Safety & Quality Summit on November 14, 2023. The purpose of the competition is to emphasize quality improvement methodology, provide a venue to share innovative and effective educational programs, showcase unique community projects, and encourage networking among medical peers with similar interests. Hospitals and health systems felt the repercussions of labor shortages throughout 2022, as they grappled with higher labor costs, filling staffing gaps, and downstream effects on transitioning patients along the continuum of care. The latest Hospital Vitals report — published in partnership with the American Hospital Association — shares year-end 2022 data from 1,300+ hospitals and health systems. Key findings comparing hospitals’ 2022 performance to 2019 include:
  • Total contract labor expense skyrocketed 257.9%  
  • Contract labor FTEs jumped 138.5%  
  • Median contract wage rate paid to staffing firms rose 56.8% 
  • Emergency overtime hours per ED visit increased 22%
