LEGENDA*

News from Washington Latin

Anna Julia Cooper Campus

Cooper 6th Graders visited the Natural History Museum this Wednesday.
Dear Cooper Families,

While the weather today is cool, the sun is shining. We are getting close to our spring break, which begins after school on this Friday. And note that we will have an all-Cooper dress down day this Friday to get us ready for the week off.

As this is our last Legenda before the week of vacation, I want to wish all our students and families a wonderful week away from Cooper!

Sincerely,

Khashiffa Roberts

Principal

Classical Reading Group for Parents

 March 20
6:45 - 8:00 pm

Anna Julia Cooper Campus

Join the next session of the parent classical reading group, led by Diana Smith with other members of our faculty.

Our Classical Reading Group has finished reading and discussing Sophocles' Oedipus the King and are ready for another reading. Diana Smith will lead us through a shorter text this time, a selection from Plato‘s Republic on the nature of education.

Please visit The Latin Way page to RSVP for this next reading group at the Cooper Campus. You can also view the recording of the first three virtual discussions, see the full calendar of discussions this year, and RSVP for our next virtual discussion on April 20 on the last of our Latin Way principles, Serve the Common Good.

Have You Lost It?

Check the Lost & Found in the Front Office!

Spring Cleaning!

We will be donating all items from the Lost & Found at the end of next week (just before break).  There are MANY jackets, coats, shirts, and water bottles, so please claim your family's belongings! After next Friday, they will no longer be on campus.

Strep Throat Caution &
COVID Testing

Strep throat or something else?

DC Health has alerted schools to an uptick in strep throat cases among school-aged children.  Many seasonal allergies can also cause a scratchy throat. Tips for knowing the difference:

  • If your child has a sore throat that seems unusually bad, is not a common allergy symptom for them, and in particular if it is accompanied by a rash, we would ask that you keep your child home and consult a medical professional.
  • If a child presents at school with a severe sore throat, especially with a rash, we will send them to our school nurse and quite likely send them home for further evaluation.

We are proceeding with extra caution here as we are approaching Spring Break and no-one wants to be sick on vacation or bring anything to relatives.

Return-to-School COVID testing

Before returning from Spring Break, we ask that students take a COVID test and that families alert the school with any positive test results. We will not use the DC reporting site; we just ask that you contact Martita Fleming if your child tests positive. COVID tests are available at the front desk and students may request as many as they need.

Please contact Martita Fleming with concerns or questions about either strep throat or COVID testing.

Multicultural Night

Thursday, April 13
6:30 pm

2nd Street Campus
Multipurpose Room

After a years-long hiatus, we are excited for the return of Multicultural Night at Washington Latin Public Charter Schools! This event is a celebration of the rich diversity of culture in our community. We invite families (or groups of families!) from both campuses and ALL countries/cultures to host a table and represent at a fair in the 2nd Street Multi-Purpose Room on Thursday, April 13th, starting at 6:30pm. Not able to host a table? No problem! We invite everyone to come out and experience our community’s diversity through displays, music, art and of course, food!!

To sign up to host a table and represent a country/region or volunteer to help, please email mcn@latinpcs.org.

Cooper Bacchanalia

Party with Purpose!

Making friends, raising funds!

May 12-14 & May 19-21

Thanks to those who have expressed interest in hosting one of our inaugural Bacchanalia parties! These are parent-hosted parties just for the Cooper Community. Each party has a theme and might have more than one family teaming up to host. Instead of selling tickets, we ask all guests to make a donation to the school.

There have been many who offered, and that is fantastic! We are still making plans but will share more information about the party options as soon as possible. Stay tuned!
