Honey Exploration Series

It's time to get excited and reserve your seat!

North American Honeys - March 22
Next Week’s Honey Exploration Series: North American Honeys features 5 honeys and two fabulous meads alongside a few tasty nibbles! This informative and fun evening will take you across the country tasting and comparing honeys. We will sample Fireweed from the Cascade Mountains in the Northwest, Tupelo from Florida, some Sourwood from Appalachia.

Then we will compare two very different honeys with the same name – Star Thistle. A wonderful purple thistle comes from the state of Michigan and the Yellow Star Thistle from California.  Same name – different taste!

And we will be tasting two meads – one made from Michigan Star Thistle – St. Ambrose Cellars and the other from Southern California – Lost Cause Meadery.

Honeys of the World - April 29
The final program in the series features honeys from around the globe. Though we will be tasting some unique honey, the truly amazing part of this evening will be presentations by beekeepers from Brazil and Tibet.

Jean-Phillipe Marelli, is an integrated pest management specialist working on campus in the cacao greenhouses. When he is here in Davis, he is tending his 50 colonies of Melipona bees in Brazil. Melipona are a small stingless bee found throughout the world in tropical zones. Jean-Phillipe will take us on a short slide journey describing the various Melipona he keeps, discussing the flora they collect and showing how they are managed and how they produce honey. A special treat: We will each get a taste of Melipona Honey from Brazil!

Additionally, Samsto Sanmu, a Humphrey Fellow on campus this year, will talk about the Women’s Beekeeping Collective she has organized in her home of Shangri-La, Tibet. Samsto has trained over 200 women in the art of beekeeping. The Collective sells honey and candles they make.

We will close the evening with a Mexican Honey and a taste of a spirit made with honey and flavored with anise.
