A great start in March

Sounds from the sea…

Explore North Coast with Center Activities kicked off its 2023 marine science lecture series with Jeff Jacobsen's fantastic presentation on whale songs and other marine acoustics on Monday, March 6. Thank you, Jeff, for that special treat, and to all who attended the event! ENC members can look forward to the next lecture in April by Troy Nicolini, the Eureka Weather Office's meteoroloist-in-charge, who will discuss tsunamis and other wave and erosion issues around Humboldt Bay. ENC will post the event on their calendar once the date is determined.

The art of towing

On March 11, eight paddlers met at Trinidad to practice towing skills. The participants consisted of several ENC club members as well as two Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center guides gaining first-time ocean experience. Before launching, the group discussed topics such as tow rope lengths and options for clipping onto the kayak being towed. On the water, participants took turns towing each other to practice basic skills of deploying a tow and stowing it once finished. They also practiced near-rock rescue extraction techniques at Prisoner Rock. During a break, the group had the chance to check out more active waters of the open ocean just beyond the head. It was a fun day to come together and train on an important rescue skill with an awesome group.

Volunteer for the ENC Social Thingy

If you’ve ever attended Explore North Coast’s Social Thingy, then you may have fun memories of meeting a variety of paddlers visiting from out of the area. This event has been a great way to reach outside the county and invite other sea kayakers to paddle here over a long weekend. Each day has at least two paddle options, catering to all skill levels and there is usually a planned potluck or barbecue on one of the days. We are planning to have our event in early October and would love anyone who is interested in helping to volunteer at whatever the amount of time you have. There are different ways to help — some of these include:
  • Planning with the potluck / barbecue
  • Paddlehost/Co-paddlehost if you've gone through the training
  • Outreach and/or researching information such camping/lodgings for those out of the area
  • General planning covering the logistics of the event
If you’d like to see how you can help please sign up here.
