Happy Mother's Day!

Dear Parents,

It was a privilege to watch the younger children speak to their mums and grandmas this morning to explain so articulately the reasons why they are so special. The children sang so beautifully and presented themselves so maturely on stage. Happy Mother's Day! Compassion was discussed as part of the conversations about Comic Relief this week; thank you for your generosity towards this worthwhile cause. The Prep Chamber Choir travelled to Bury this week for their latest competition- congratulations to all the children involved, they sang beautifully and are a credit to the school. Finally, I hope to see you at the PTA Spring Fair on Saturday 25th March, 2.00pm to 4.00pm in the Prep Hall.

Nursery

This week, we have been busy getting ready for Mother’s Day by planting and pressing flowers, and even creating flower artwork to give to our mummies!

We have been discussing how flowers and plants grow as well as how various flowers smell differently.

The Nursery Team

Reception

It has been lovely to see the children's reading development this term- they can read with a partner taking it in turns to read each sentence. All the children are now reading books from the AKS reading scheme.

The superhero dressing up clothes have continued to be very popular and imaginative games involving people needing saving have been acted out. The children have loved reading the different superhero stories including 'The Superhero Hotel.'

Learning through trial and error, the children are now building ever taller but more stable buildings. This week, three boys used the construction photographs to recreate the Empire State Building with fantastic results.

Miss Allen and Mrs Walsh

Year 1

It has been another exciting week for Year 1 as the children practised songs, poems and stories for their mummies for their special assembly today. The children produced their neatest ever writing because their mummies are so very important.

In addition, the children were encouraged to wear a splash of red to help them take part in Red Nose Day fundraising- they looked even brighter and more colourful than usual as a result!

For a few weeks now, the children in Year 1 have been preparing to make environmentally friendly bird cakes. We now have a pleasing, if squishy, collection of lovely things for birds to eat.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brooker

Year 2

Within a school week so many things can change, like the weather which brings opportunities to develop our curriculum!

The snow last week brought a great reason to get outside and develop our literacy skills. Year 2 came up with wonderful expanded noun phrases to describe the wintry landscape. We have continued to learn about time in Maths and have researched the life of Sacagawea.

Mrs Bleasdale
Year 3

This week, Year 3 have worked very hard to complete their Spring assessments, with everyone doing their very best.

We have spent most of our afternoons rehearsing for our Year 3 and 4 production ahead of the performances next week. Friday saw us 'wow' the Prep School with an amazing dress rehearsal!

Mrs Blinston and Mr Worthington

Year 4

In Maths, the class went outside to measure in metres using trundle wheels to measure the length and width of the netball court and calculated the perimeter.

We have started to write our own 'Ride of Passage' narratives. Our stories are based on a rainforest, so they link well to our Humanities learning.

Our play, 'Hoodwinked', is nearly ready to perform- we enjoyed dressing up in our costumes!

Mrs Briggs

Year 5

In Maths, a group of pupils learned how to write numbers in binary, quickly getting into the idea. They managed to write all the numbers up to 60; this proved popular so will be repeated with some other groups soon.

In Science, we began a topic about energy, learning that energy is stored in fuel and food and that this energy can be converted to heat, sound, light and movement by both living and non-living things.

Finally, some beautiful floral mandalas were produced in Art this week.

Mrs Whitaker
Year 6

In Geography, the children have been exploring some of the hills and mountains of the UK and identifying key features and facts. Well done Joe and Will for creating a bar chart to compare the height of a range of mountains to include the Pennines and the Peak District.

The children have been raising their awareness of the 350 careers available in the NHS following a workshop with Mrs Dillon from the Senior School last week. Well done to Freddie, Wilfred and Isaac for their video infomercial, plus Sophia and Sadie for their fantastic poster.

In Maths, the children began their new study on area and perimeter. Well done to Evie and Nikhil for calculating the area and perimeter of tricky rectilinear shapes.

Finally, a quick mention and thank you to Democracy Pillar Leader Rupert, for creating a 'Love Your Classroom' poster to remind pupils of the importance of keeping their classrooms clean and tidy and taking pride in their learning environment!

Mr Avis and Mr Rice
Achievement Assembly- Congratulations to all our Winners!

Sports Round Up

With the weather playing havoc with this weeks fixtures, thankfully our U9 footballers and U11 girls netballers were able to get some match time.

Our U11 netballers made use of the indoor Sports halls, and took to court in the local LSA league fixture vs Lytham Hall Park, with wins for both the A and B squads.

On Wednesday, our U9 football squad travelled to Cheadle Hulme in the AJIS U9 Festival. With 16 schools entered, AKS faced some tough opponents from around the Northwest. With 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses in their fixtures, AKS played some fantastic football and gave it their best in all their games. Arthur scored 4 fantastic goals, Alex scored 1 and Raife made his debut in goal, pulling off some fine saves throughout.

Mr Moretti
