Ahoy hoy!
In honor of Women's History Month, I recently spoke on a panel about the diverse experiences of women in ocean science at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography. We discussed a wide range of topics, from our work in the ocean sciences to some of the barriers women still face in oceanography, particularly at sea. Highlighting these barriers, and working to dismantle them, is an area ODL will be focusing on more in the future.
This month has seen many amazing women in oceanography highlighted, including Andrea Motley Crabtree, the Army's first deep-sea diver, and Marie Tharp, after whom the Secretary of the Navy renamed the Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship USNS Maury. NOAA Ocean Exploration Equity Advisor Catalina Martinez was named a Remarkable Women finalist, and Trinbagonian deep-sea biologist Dr. Judi Gobin had a newly discovered tubeworm named for her! These women are my dear friends and colleagues; seeing them recognized in this way is wonderful.
While these are significant steps in finally recognizing women's critical roles in ocean sciences, there's much more we can do. Please consider how you and your organization can not only encourage women to pursue the marine sciences but, most critically, support their journey along the way.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) announced the launch of the Moananuiākea Voyage, the circumnavigation of the Pacific upon arrival in Juneau, Alaska on June 10, 2023. During the four-year expedition, Hōkūleʻa, Hikianalia, and about 400 crew members will sail an estimated 43,000 nautical miles around the Pacific, visiting 36 countries and archipelagoes, nearly 100 indigenous territories, and more than 300 ports.
Ocean Discovery League has been announced as one of their Voyage Education & Mission Partners, and we look forward to working alongside PVS throughout this upcoming Moananuiākea Voyage.

The White House Releases Ocean Climate Action Plan
The President will direct the Secretary of Commerce to consider initiating a new National Marine Sanctuary designation to protect all U.S. waters around the Pacific Remote Islands. The new sanctuary would ensure the U.S. will reach the President’s goal of conserving at least 30% of ocean waters under American jurisdiction by 2030. Read Full Plan
