Call for Abstracts

Calling all trainees! We are now accepting applications to submit an abstract for our upcoming Women's+ Health Trainee Research Conference, which will take place on June 14th, 2023 from 9AM-12:30PM PST. This conference will provide trainees with the opportunity to showcase their research on women's+ health through oral and poster presentations. Submit  by April 16th at 11:59pm PST. Learn more.

Funding Confirmed

Good news! We were successful in our application to the Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters (GCRC) competition, which will provide us with $200,000 to support our operations this year. Thank you to everyone who filled out our Member’s Survey and supported our application in other ways.

Behind the Science: Improving the Health of Women Living with HIV 

“Historically, the majority of HIV research has involved men, thus limiting generalizability of findings to women, who constitute [less than 50%] of people living with HIV globally. The specific needs of half of the population of people living with HIV haven’t been addressed for years, and it’s only been changing recently.” Read more.

This Women’s Health Seminar, with Dr. Travis Hodges, will look at negative cognitive bias across development, and stress the importance of analyzing sex and age when investigating the neurobiology of depressive-like phenotypes.

The UBC Data Science and Health Research Cluster has launched their first AI Meets Ethics Speaker Series which is looking at the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in health care. Join Dr. Charlene Ronquillo in their first session to learn more about this evolving field. The event is free and open to everyone but registration is required.

Funding
 

(REDI) Early Career Transition Award

The Research Excellence, Diversity and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award will provide researchers with mentorship and early career support. The Institute of Gender and Health is supporting one funding pool. The Women’s Health Funding Pool will also support one project focused on improving the health and well-being of women and gender-diverse people.The total amount available for the 2022 funding opportunity for Phase 1 and 2 is $26,400,000. Note, the first round of the REDI award is focusing on applicants who are Black or racialized women. Apply by May 3rd, 2023. Read more.
 

CIHR-PHAC Applied Public Health Chair

This funding opportunity is for mid-career researchers who want to improve health and health equity at the decision-making stages.  There is $1,150,000 available to fund one application relevant to Research Area 5 – 2SLGBTQI+ Older Adults. Apply by May 2nd, 2023. Read more.

Join the GROWW Cohort 

The GROWW program is a health research training platform supported by CIHR Institutes. The program annually accepts a group of 20 clinical trainees, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and ECRs from across Canada. Cohort members will have the opportunity to be involved in workshops and retreats, a mentorship program, experiential learning, educational workshops, and have the potential for funding opportunities. Modern Diseases Leipzig Clinician Scientist Program

The Leipzig University in Germany has a new three-year Clinician Scientist Program funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in which they will be investigating modern diseases. And they are offering four Clinician Scientist Fellowships for candidates who show enthusiasm for science and aim to link basic and clinical research. Apply by May 1st, 2023. Read more.
 

Public Scholars Initiative 

In partnership with UBC Health, Public Scholars Initiative (PSI) is accepting applications for a new health equity stream. The Health Equity Stream is a dedicated funding source to further increase the number of PSI scholars working to impact health equity within local, national, and global health systems. Breast Arterial Calcifications Survey

Dr. Charlotte Yong-Hing from the University of British Columbia is leading an international research group conducting a survey on the awareness and reporting preferences of breast arterial calcifications amongst referring physicians in Canada. Your responses to this survey will allow radiologists to better understand your preferences and implications on patient care. Applications on a rolling basis. Read more.
 

International Properties & Open Science Survey

The International Neuroethics Patent Initiative (INPI) is interested in how neuroscientists at Canadian universities perceive both the value and drawbacks of international properties and open science practices. They have a new survey on these topics to learn more about this evolving landscape. Read more.

Sexual Pain Survey

The UBC Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Laboratory is developing a new measure for sexual pain and needs your help. If you experience painful sex for any reason, you are eligible to complete the survey.  It will take around 20-30 minutes, is anonymous and will enter you in a draw to win 1 of 50 $25 gift cards.
