As a society, we’ve long perpetuated the myth of “Black exceptionalism”—the idea that Black people must prove they are “better” or “different” than their peers in order to be successful. Unfortunately, this false notion has been used as a tool of oppression for generations.

Join #DCSS on March 29th at 12 NOON EST for a thought-provoking discussion with Aerial Ellis, Ed.D, Managing Principal at Advisory 83, and Vedet Coleman-Robinson, Ph.D. Executive Director, Association of African American Museums at our next DCSS: Nobody’s Perfect.

Black exceptionalism is a myth. It implies that there is something special about being Black that makes us stand out from other people. But the truth is that we all have unique strengths and abilities, regardless of race or gender. We look forward to seeing you.

Congratulations to the inaugural cohort of YP Institute. Thanks to our partners at EdChoice, this cohort focused on K-12 education.

Cohort participants focused on educational opportunities from both a national and local perspective while also providing dialogue and activities to help participants gain a greater understanding of the educational landscape and available educational options in their respective communities. The inaugural group was challenged to think outside the box and develop a plan to bring education and awareness to their communities regarding the present issues and opportunities.

On February 28, 2023– The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Phoenix Metropolitan Chapter, penned an open letter to Governor Katie Hobbs, co-signed by several prominent Black women leaders, including Greater Phoenix Urban League Young Professionals President Ashlee Atkins, in support of CROWN Act anti-hair discrimination protections in Arizona.

The CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, is a law that prohibits racial discrimination based on natural textures and protective hairstyles. In Arizona, HB2593 has continued to languish in committee.

As of yesterday, March 17, 2023, Governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order making it unlawful to discriminate against someone based on their hair texture or protective style for state workers and contractors.

We are now the 21st state to have enacted the CROWN Act into law! We made history!
