Globus is a fast, reliable and secure managed service for challenging data movement, offered through AARNet.

AARNet is running Globus technical sessions to help researchers find out more about Globus and to discuss technical problems they are trying to solve or issues they would like to address, relating to Globus or data movement more generally.  These sessions are open to everyone in the research community.  Product specialists will be available to share knowledge and provide assistance.

The next online session will be on 30 March at 11 am AEDT.  Visit here to find out more about Globus or register to attend:  https://www.aarnet.edu.au/aarnet-globus-technical-catch-ups.
New Developers of Open Source Software in Ecology:  Applications Close on 31-Mar
Early career ecologists and new software developers:  The Ecological Society of Australia is calling for entries to the ARDC-supported New Developers of Open Source Software in Ecology.  The award recognises the vital role of software in advancing ecological research.

Submit an entry before 31 March:  https://www.ecolsoc.org.au/awards/ardc-award-for-new-developers-of-open-source-software-in-ecology/.
Evaluate Application Performance using TAU and E4S:  4-Apr
This workshop is for computational scientists who want to evaluate the performance of their parallel, scientific applications.

When/Where:  4 April 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm AWST | Hybrid

In this workshop, you will learn about the Extreme-scale Scientific Software Stack (https://e4s.io/) and the TAU Performance System (http://tau.uoregon.edu/) and its interfaces to other tools and libraries.

During the hands-on portion of the workshop, the instructor will attempt to collect and analyse performance data for additional user codes.  Attendees are welcome to contact the instructor ahead of time to begin collecting data to discuss at the workshop. (Contact training@pawsey.org.au).

2023 Eureka Prize for Excellence in Research Software:  Closes 14-Apr
The new Eureka Prize category, sponsored by ARDC, recognises and celebrates the vital role of developing and maintaining software in advancing research and scientific discovery.

ARDC and the Australian Museum invite entries from developers and maintainers of established research software, including research software engineers, authors of research software, and researchers who code.  Nominees can come from academia, government, industry, citizen science groups, and not-for-profit organisations.

This Prize presents an excellent opportunity for the research community to acknowledge the important place that research software holds in the conduct of modern research.

Nominations close 14 April:  https://bit.ly/ARDCEurekaPrize2023.
Award for New Developers of Open Source Software for Data Analytics:  Closes 22-Apr
Entries are now open for the 2023 Statistical Society of Australia (SSA) Bill Venables Award for new developers of open source software for data analytics, sponsored by the ARDC. Entries close 22 April 2023.

The goal of this award is to encourage new open source software development from the Australian community with a view to supporting efforts to develop and share data science and statistics methodology.

There is prize money of $4000 for first prize, with a runner-up prize of $1000.

For more information and to submit, visit:  https://statsocaus.github.io/venables-award/.
Tech Talk 20:  How LAMMPS Gets Academics Coding in C++:  26-Apr
The molecular dynamics software package LAMMPS is a widely used, open source package.  It has large chunks of code contributed by academics-turned-coders, like the speaker!  In this talk we’ll explore how LAMMPS's object-oriented framework helps academics to start writing or modifying code with relatively little C++ knowledge (“From Zero to Dev!").

He will also share his journey to becoming a research software engineer (RSE), and the challenges and opportunities ahead for RSEs.

When:  26 April 2023, 2.00pm AEDT
Where:  Online
Who: Dr Shern Tee, Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, University of Queensland

More information and register:  https://eresear.ch/techtalk.
Pint of Science Festival:  22 to 24-May
Pint of Science Australia delivers science engagement through a national festival that builds the Australian public’s appreciation of science, contributes positively to combat inequity and negative stereotypes within the Australian science sector, establishes and supports cross-discipline collaborations, and celebrates and champions excellence in the Australian science and science engagement sectors.

The festival takes place this year from 22 - 24 of May 2023.  See https://pintofscience.com.au/.

If you have an eResearch science story to share or would like to help other people share their research, then get involved as either volunteers or speakers.  If you have any questions, get in touch at https://pintofscience.com.au/contact/.
Join us at the Integrated Earth 2023 Symposium:  Sep-23
The ARDC, TERN, NCI, AuScope, ACCESS-NRI and IMOS are partnering to hold the Australian Academy of Science Elizabeth and Frederick White Research Conference, Integrated Earth 2023, face-face and hybrid on 12 and 13 September, and free to attend.

Supported by the Australian Academy of Science, this 2-day conference aims to uncover the answers to this pressing question facing researchers, scientists and STEM professionals working across the five Earth systems – geosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, which are essential for all aspects of human existence.

AARNet and the ARDC Collaboration Brings BinderHub to Researchers
Australian researchers are creating flexible and shareable code repositories using BinderHub in the Australian Text Analytics platform (ATAP), and a national BinderHub service is in development, thanks to an ARDC and AARNet collaboration.

BinderHub allows researchers to create flexible and shareable code repositories, and enables reproducible research.  However, it takes considerable technical skill to set up BinderHub.  But the collaboration is aimed at making it much accessible to researchers, with BinderHub becoming (for instance) part of the new HASS Community Data Lab, which is due to be released in mid-2023.
