Confronting racism, helping Black farmers
... and getting fresh food on your table, too

In April, Christ the King’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program starts in its third year. In a win-win situation for everyone, congregations in this program support Black farmers, providing stable income for a group that has been historically discriminated against. Church members buy shares for an eight-week period of time and receive farm fresh produce each week.

“This has been a great way to live out our commitment to confront racism, support farmers in a very direct way, and in the process get fresh food on our table, too,” said Vallie Telfer one of the coordinaters of the program which grew out of research done by CTK’s Racial Solidarity Team. In addition, CTK last year received a $20,000 grant from the ELCA Domestic Hunger program and uses these funds to buy shares which are then provided to area food pantries, such as Dorcas and Western Wake Crisis Ministry.

This spring, our farmer, Larry Davis, is collaborating with other farmers to provide blueberries, strawberries and blackberries in addition to spring’s leafy greens. Sign up on Church Center for the spring season by April 7; deliveries begin April 22 and run through June 17 (except for Memorial Day weekend). Pick-ups are on Saturday mornings at CTK in the Atrium from 9:15 to 10:30. Once you register on Church Center, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to pay for your half-share ($125 for eight weeks) or full-share ($250). For questions, contact Vallie Telfer at 919-418-0200 or vallietelfer@gmail.com.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton (center) learned about CTK’s Black farmer program during her visit in November. At far right is farmer Larry Davis with his brother, at left volunteers Phil and Vallie Telfer.

PARTICIPATE IN
“MOVING FORWARD IN FAITH” SMALL GROUPS

Under the heading of “Moving Forward in Faith,” Christ the King is embarking on a three-month project proposed by the Racial Solidarity Team. The purpose of this project is to do a “racial equity assessment.” To help us do this important work, we have engaged Rev. Brenda Smith and Deacon Tammy Devine. The two of them have teamed up to do anti-racism training with many congregations across the country. Pastor Brenda will visit Cary March 17-20 and conduct one-on-one interviews with CTK members who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). She will also connect with members after services on Sunday, and you can connect with her via e-mail as well, brendiksmith@gmail.com.

Deacon Tammy will offer online small group sessions for our members who are White via zoom, lasting about 45 minutes to an hour. The following days and times are available:

  • Tuesday, March 21, 3pm and 7pm
  • Tuesday, March 28, 1pm
  • Wednesday, March 29, 10am and 4pm
  • Tuesday, April 4, 11am

Please select the date and time that works for you and sign up in Church Center. For questions about “Moving Forward in Faith,” call Pastor Wolfgang Herz-Lane at 856-278-3055.

Spring clean up day is April 1

Preparing for this upcoming Easter season requires teamwork, and luckily, that’s exactly what our Spring Church Clean Up Day offers! We need eager helpers of all ages to join us from 9am to 1pm on April 1 to spruce up our church campus.

There are plenty of projects available such as spreading mulch around the buildings and on the playground, trimming bushes and trees, weeding, picking up trash, and hauling away yard waste. For those looking for a more creative task, there’s also the chance to clean up our fountain or tidy up our prayer and rain gardens.

And don’t worry about getting hungry. Chef Chris will be providing meals to all willing helpers! So put Saturday, April 1, on your calendar and join us as we work together to bring our church grounds back to life in time for Holy Week and Easter. Sign up now in Church Center!
