Nearly Spring and
The 131st Legislative Session is in Full Swing!

We are still waiting for a number of priority bills to be printed with their LD numbers. Here is our focus issue update. We will keep you informed through action alerts as we call on you for support via advocacy and testimony!

Foremost we will continue our efforts to support passage of tribal sovereignty legislation. All updates, bill numbers and info will be listed here on the Wabanaki Alliance bill tracker.

Connected to all our equity and inclusion work is a bill to legally define environmental justice for the state of Maine, An Act Regarding Environmental Justice. This is crucial for definitions of environmental justice populations in state policies and processes in order to ensure equity.

MCAN has been helping draft an offshore wind procurement bill that will direct the state to request bids for offshore wind (OSW) energy projects in the Gulf of Maine. MCAN sees OSW as key to transitioning off fossil fuels to renewables for our power.

Housing justice means meeting the basic needs of Mainers first before everyone can join in the fight for climate justice. LD2: An Act to Address Maine's Housing Crisis-- the Omnibus housing bill (sponsored by Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross); LR 1836: An Act to End Chronic Homelessness by Creating the Housing First Fund, (sponsored by Rep. Drew Gattine); LR 833 An Act to Enact the Housing Opportunity for Maine Act (The HOME Act) (sponsored by Rep. Cheryl Golek) are just a few of the housing acts we are supporting.

Transportation is our state’s largest greenhouse gas emissions sector. Towards shifting that we are supporting LR 2317 An Act to Promote Passenger Rail for Commuters (sponsored by Rep. Maggie O’Neil) which will create a study on how to reform the Downeaster to be more commuter friendly. And aligning and coordinating land use and transportation we support LR 1782 An Act to Establish a Thriving Corridors Program by Encouraging Affordable Housing and Mixed-use Development (sponsored by Rep. Traci Geer).

MCAN, along with your help, continues to lift transformative policies that will bring systemic change to our state!

CALLS TO ACTION

Pine Tree Amendment Hearing

The public hearing for the Pine Tree Amendment, LD 928 will be on Wednesday, March 22nd.

We want to flood them with testimonies in support of the bill!
There is a guide and template here for writing and submitting testimony.
Speak Out for Housing Justice!

Maine Equal Justice asks us to Sign this petition to tell Augusta we need housing solutions today! The Housing Opportunities for Maine (HOME) Act is one of these solutions which will give more Maine renters fair treatment, greater choice, and stability. The (HOME) Act would help low-income Maine families afford housing by creating the Home Opportunity Fund, putting more homes in reach for Mainers in every part of our state.

In order to pass the HOME Act and other housing priorities, we need thousands of Mainers to speak out. Check out their new factsheet on the HOME Act here.
