WATCH VIDEO: Andy Taylor: What is a Painting?
Dear friend of AKG,

Andy Taylor shows us in color and form the immense beauty – not of the iconic landscape – of the feeling evoked by the moments witnessed along the way. Taylor has been studying, drawing, painting, and remembering “insignificant” scenes – moments in a landscape that cause the artist to pause, study, decide, and draw what’s important about a scene, and translate that memory to canvas. These subjective reactions to reality in the form of shape and color are hallmarks of Taylor’s work.

We hope you take two minutes to watch this video from a recent visit to the Carbondale, Colorado studio of Andy Taylor who shares how a painting takes form from inspiration to canvas. Changing Course, featuring Andy Taylor and Peter Campbell, is on view through March 25.

Warm regards,

"I feel like if you see the color, paint the color. At least try it. I’m not trying to fool anybody, I’m just trying to paint what I see and what I feel."

"I see these colors. I feel like I don’t even have the intensity of the color of the leaves as what I see. It’s not even close. But I can take you there in October and I can show you that bush and you’ll see it, maybe. Or some of it."

"What gives me the most pleasure or excitement in what I do is an outright exploration. Now, that’s drawing outside; that is one of the greatest things in the world, I think. My mind just disappears. I don’t even have to really concentrate anymore, I just sit down and go with it. And here in the studio when I’m drawing or doing the oil pastels, you can just sort of let it go. You don’t feel like it’s a big commitment, and you get to play."
