LRE Update for March 17, 2023

Online Meeting for Parents of Children & Youth

Mon, March 20, 7 pm

Parents, you're invited to join Rev. Denise on Zoom. We want to spend time with you both to listen and to share possibilities for how we could shape our future Religious Exploration programs before making longer term plans regarding staffing. See the Focus for meeting info.

Final Opportunity to Attend a Cottage Meeting

Tuesday, March 21 at 7 pm ~ online

Thank you to all those who have already attended a Cottage Meeting to have meaningful conversation about money and our dreams. If you have not yet attended one, we hope you will attend this final online meeting. You can participate from the comfort of your home without having to commute to Church or hire a babysitter. If you have not yet attended a Cottage Meeting, please make plans to attend, even if you have already submitted your pledge. We hope to see you there.

Women's History Month Book Drive!

Throughout March, we are holding a Book Drive for Women's History Month, to benefit Bernie's Book Bank and CCUU's own Little Free Library. All new and gently used children’s books at a birth-6th grade reading level (fiction and non-fiction: picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, mysteries, biographies, science fiction, sports, science, technology) will be collected -- books by and about all kinds of women and girls (all races, all nationalities, all abilities, all ages, LGBTQIA+) especially welcome! Place your donations in the bins which can be found just outside the church doors, north and south, as well as inside by the main office and in the north lobby.

Online UUA Presidential Forum

Meet the Candidate for UUA President
This Saturday, March 18 at Noon

It is an exciting time in Unitarian Universalism as we prepare to elect a new president of our Association. The UUA President is the primary public and spiritual leader of Unitarian Universalism, as well as the UUA’s Chief Executive Officer. They help to lead UUs on a path to Beloved Community, in which people of diverse backgrounds, identities, and theological beliefs can thrive. Voting will open in early June, and presidential forums begin this weekend.
Four UUA Presidential Forums are being held between now and the beginning of June. Registration is required to attend.

Worship Service Recordings

If you missed any of the last few worship services, you can view them on our website or on our YouTube channel (and while you're there, please subscribe!) - thanks to the hard work of Luis, our Tech Coordinator. Now available:
THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 19

Open Forum Discussion

Sundays at 9 am

Join us in classroom 5 or online: go to to www.zoom.us or call 312-626-6799 and when prompted, enter meeting id 927 6261 2301 and passcode 1025.
Please join us to discuss “the issues of the day” while respectfully welcoming different perspectives. Our topic on March 19 will be Can Microbes Feed the World? Lab Grown Meat and Other Possibilities. A gently recommended resource for viewing in advance of the discussion is available here.

Sunday Worship

March 19 ~ Bucking the Patriarchy

This is an All-Church Service; young people attend worship with their families and do not have religious exploration classes.
Florence Buck (1860-1925) was an Educator, Unitarian Minister and Advocate for Women, Children and Those Society Forgot. She advocated for education as the answer for all issues within both larger society and within Unitarian faith, showing compassion for those neglected by society, progressing in her field despite gender bias, as one of the first women ministers. Rev. Denise will give us a glimpse of this UU hero and the paper she presented to the Unitarian Universalist History and Heritage Society.
We will have a special share-the-plate for Anthony Liuzzo, son of Viola Liuzzo, the UU civil rights activist who was murdered in Selma in 1965 and about whom Rev. Denise preached in October.
Our Message for All Ages will be Ambitious Girl, and one of our youth will be singing the offertory.

Join us in the Sanctuary for this service, or to join the live-stream: go to https://bit.ly/CCUUworshipSvc.

Congregational Interim Transition Session

March 19, 11:15 am
Visioning Our Future Congregation

Considering we all want a future with hope for CCUU and that many of the history sessions we had included people’s dreams, we thought the first step in looking at our history, taking it in, and then imagining what comes next would be envisioning our future. Take time to look at the History Highway which the Interim Transition Team has posted in Atherton Hall. Think about what might come next, and join us on March 19 for a visioning session.

Concert with Aly Halpert

Sunday, March 19 at 7 pm Central time

Celebrate World Water Week with a concert hosted by Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth and sponsored by UU Animal Ministry and Side With Love! Join us for a galvanizing concert with the inspiring musician and religious leader, Aly Halpert (she/her)! As we face ongoing climate challenges, let's be inspired by community and song to continue and to deepen.
Next Week ~ March 20 - 26

Transitions

4th Thursdays ~ March 23 at 10 am

Our mission is to provide a forum for mature adults to explore life transitions with a supportive community during daytime hours. Our monthly gatherings begin with a pre-program coffee hour and finishes with a convivial post-program potluck lunch.
Please join us this month for a program on Meditation and the Buddhist practice of loving kindness. A Buddhist monk from the Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock will come to talk to us about their Buddhist beliefs. CCUU member Juli Cicarelli has been going to their meditation at the Arlington Heights Senior Center and finds they have a unique perspective on life.
