TACOMA BOAT BUILDERS

Message in a Bottle
March 2023

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITIES!

📐 We started a pilot program for Alumni Youth in February!  This provides a space for our youth who have attended our CORE programming to continue learning and building on their woodworking skills.
🪱 Our Next Move Intern is learning his marine biology the TBB way! As we pulled our small boats from the water for a spring cleanup, we discovered the handiwork of the dreaded Taredo Navalis, commonly known as the Naval Shipworm. These guys make tiny little holes from the outside but have a look at the keel on Promise! The worms don’t look like much, but they can turn wood into swiss cheese in weeks.
📚 Thanks to the support from Tacoma Creates, TBB offered three pop-up community events at Fern Hill, Swasey, and South Tacoma Public Libraries!  Check us out for another pop-up session at Fern Hill on April 5th, 3:30 - 5 PM.
🐝 We want to give a massive shout-out to our Imagine Justice Project Americorps Team, who have spearheaded the Tacoma Public Library pop-ups this year!  Jahni, Quantum, and Kaitlin are the bee's knees!  Thank you for bringing your best to our community and helping TBB reach beyond the shop!

TBB Goes to School:

After-School Programming at Bethel HS

🚌 TBB staff is grabbing our pencils and tape measures to take the Boat Shop on the road; We're heading to Bethel High to provide weekly ON-CAMPUS programming!  In collaboration and with the support of our partners at the Pierce County Juvenile Court, we're piloting a program for students in May with a follow-up program scheduled for the fall.  Stay tuned for more!

TBB Goes to Remann Hall:

A Unique Online Program is Changing to In-Person

🖍  In 2021, TBB began offering online programming two Saturdays a month to youth in detention at Remann Hall.  Starting this spring, we will provide programming in-person for the first time.  We look forward to developing an innovative program that youth look forward to!

Community Boating:

Back by Popular Demand!

🛶 TBB is hosting its fourth annual Summer Community Boating program! Dozens of community folks have joined us in the past. We can’t wait to share the waterway with them and some new friends, too; launch dates are coming soon!

Mentor Spotlight:

Patrick and His Dust Collection Project

👋 Meet Patrick! He’s a rad dude who enjoys sailing and turning wood on a lathe.  He volunteers with TBB in the shop and programs! He’s always finding ways to improve things around here.  His latest project: better dust collection makes for cleaner air!  Woodworking equipment releases fine dust and that’s hazardous and messy.  Thanks to Patrick’s sharp eye for a solid fix, we can operate these machines more safely as they collect dust with better-quality filter bags, effortlessly triggered with a simple switch, and he even made it all mobile.  Thank you, Patrick!

Staff Spotlight:

Avery Goes to Washington (D.C.)

✈️ Ever looking for ways to deepen the impact of our work, Avery embarked on an adventure to Washington, D.C., to attend the National Mentoring Summit.  As the Youth Engagement Specialist, Avery is keenly focused on mental health for youth and families served by TBB.  But he was also there to meet one-to-one (TBB-style) with some of Washington State’s elected officials, including United States Representative Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, United States Senator Maria Cantwell, and president pro tempore of the United States Senate, Senator Patty Murray.  Pictured here with Representative Strickland, Avery presented each official with a hand-crafted pen and decorative box our youth and staff made.  During the Summit, Avery engaged with other youth-serving organizations, including Son of a Saint, doing incredible work in New Orleans!
