Notice how instructive the sequence of these three expressions is: grace, faith and love.
First comes grace as the opposite of any personal worth of ours and the satisfaction of our wishes and requirements. All our hope consists only in God’s grace, which is given to us, who are unworthy, according to God’s love and mercy. Christ Himself is the living embodiment and clear expression of this love.
St. Paul, recalling the story of his conversion, attributes it solely to the almighty grace of God. He says that grace was revealed abundantly in him; although his sin was great, God’s love overcame it, and covered it with the abundance of His grace. St. Paul never forgot this. The realization of this was the basis of his great humility. And faith entered his heart instead of unbelief: not only a general, unconscious feeling of hope in God, but a living, firm faith in the living Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. And together with this ardent faith, a love for the same living Savior was kindled. Let us also ask the Lord unceasingly for these gifts, and may the grace revealed in us fill our entire being. It will change everything for us, it will soften the grief that oppresses us and will give us new strength.

«Благодать же Господа нашего Иисуса Христа открылась во мне обильно, с верою и любовью во Христе Иисусе» (1Тим. 1:14)
Заметим, как поучительна последовательность этих трех выражений: благодать, вера и любовь.
Прежде всего является благодать как противоположность всякого личного нашего достоинства и как удовлетворение всех наших желаний и потребностей. Вся наша надежда заключается в одной благодати Божией, которая дается и нам, недостойным, по Божией любви и милосердию. Сам Христос есть живое воплощение и ясное выражение этой любви.
Апостол Павел, вспоминая историю своего обращения, приписывает его единственно лишь всесильной благодати Божией. Он говорит, что благодать эта открылась в нем обильно; хотя грех его был велик, но любовь Божия превзошла его и покрыла его преизбытком благодати Его. Ап. Павел этого никогда не забыл, это сознание было основою его великого смирения. И вера вселилась в его сердце вместо неверия: не только общее, бессознательное чувство упования на Бога, но живая, твердая вера в живого Спасителя, Господа нашего Иисуса Христа. И вместе с этой пламенной верой возгорелась любовь к Тому же живому Спасителю. Будем же и мы неотступно молить Господа об этих дарах, и открывшаяся в нас благодать да наполнит все наше существо. Она изменит для нас все, смягчит гнетущую нас скорбь и даст нам новые силы.
