Conservation in action

Our curator of conservation, Thina Miya, travelled to Cape Town in the beginning of February to partake in a four-day internship with DK Conservators where she focused on paper conservation. During her time there, Thina worked on the conservation of the CCAC’s Body Maps prints of the Bambanani Women's Group, a series that deals with HIV/AIDS diagnoses. DK Conservators continue to work on the conservation of the artworks, which will be displayed in the Constitutional Court's public gallery later this year.

The work on the Body Maps is made possible by the Mercury Phoenix Trust and the Mellon Foundation. Learn more about our funders here.
Thina Miya working on removing the film from the Body Maps prints which were attached to a dibond hanging mechanism, using heat and an adhesive eraser, under the supervision of DK Conservators' staff. She also learnt about book conservation.
The Bambanani HIV/AIDS Body Maps are also the subject of an upcoming CCAC publication. As part of the research process, Thina Miya interviewed the artists and facilitators of the project, including Victoria Ndyaluvana (left) and Noloyiso Balintu (right).

Youth development programme

Nomusa Mbata (pictured below) joined the Constitutional Court Trust (CCT) in January as our eighth intern. Our internship programme offers recent South African graduates with an interest in visual art and justice in South Africa an opportunity to develop their experience in the fields of art administration, curatorship, cataloguing, research, public engagement and art conservation.

As part of a pilot programme, we offer our successful interns a chance to extend their time working on the CCAC by 6-12 months, by working as an assistant curator. Our previous intern, Emma Prior, is the second to have assumed this role.
