An informal discussion over drinks will follow Professor Bodart’s presentation of this exhibition, which examines hundreds of years of scribbles and sketches by notable artists.

A pioneer in American Independent Cinema, Bette Gordon is known for her bold explorations of themes related to sexuality, desire, and power. Her acclaimed classic indie film VARIETY (1983) is a bold story about a woman who sells tickets at a pornographic movie theatre, set in the neon-lit squalor of Times Square in the mid 1980’s.

Franz Schubert's Winterreise

This evening will feature Franz Schubert's Winterreise with pianist Giulio Biddau and baritone André Morsch. Biddau is a recipient of the Casagrande Competition in Terni, “Les Nuits Pianistiques – Lauréats SPEDIDAM” in Aix-en-Provence, “José Iturbi” in Valencia, and the Tbilisi International Piano Competition. Morsch is a recipient of the Hermann-Reutter-Prize at the prestigious 'Internationaler Wettbewerb für Liedkunst' in Stuttgart and the Prix Bernac from the Académie Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

"Transes": The Resonance of Nass el Ghiwane

The discussion will be preceded by a screening of Laktionoya’s short film, Territory of Empty Windows, followed by This Rain Will Never Stop, a feature-length film by Alina Gorlova.

Vulgar Experiments

Phan, Assistant professor in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, will discuss a series of what he calls "vulgar experiments," in which 18th century Vietnamese writers took original Classical Chinese literature and redesigned it into vernacular Vietnamese – transforming the language and its literary scope in the process.

Alfredo Spagna is a lecturer in the discipline of Psychology and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Neuroscience & Behavior at Columbia University. His recent research focuses on the psychological and neural mechanisms of attention on cognition and consciousness, with a particular interest in crossmodal / supramodal (auditory and visual) interactions.

After completing his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology and Psychophysiology at the Department of Cognitive Psychology, Sapienza, University of Rome, he became increasingly interested in the neural basis of attention and cognitive control. He is currently devoted to conducting neuroimaging studies to investigate the anatomy, circuitry, and pathology of attentional networks. He previously developed the Auditory Attentional Network Task, allowing for the investigation of the efficiency and interactions of the three attentional networks – alerting, orienting, and executive control.

A Poet at War: The Experience of Ihor Mitrov
On March 3, Reid Hall welcomed poet and Ukrainian soldier Ihor Mitrov, who screened a short film of footage taken at the front lines of the ongoing war between the Ukraine and Russia, and read a selection of his poems. Harriman Resident Nikita Grigorov helped to translate the poems as well as the film. The event was co-sponsored by the Institute for Ideas and Imagination and the Ukrainian Institute.

Launch of La fureur de vivre, the French translation of Lauren Hough's memoir
For the second installment of our Women's Month series, Lauren Hough presented the French translation of her memoir, La fureur de vivre, published by Les Éditions du Portrait. An interview by editor Rachèle Bevilacqua followed readings of excerpts in both English and French. Translators Marie Chuvin and Laure Jouanneau-Lopez assisted with both the interview and the subsequent Q&A. The evening concluded with a signing, books provided by Librairie Maruani.

Columbia University faculty and researchers are encouraged to apply to the Faculty Visitorship Program at Reid Hall, jointly supported by Columbia Global Centers | Paris and the Institute for Ideas and Imagination.
Selected visitors will be invited to stay for one to three weeks, and will be asked to contribute to our podcast/video series, or take part in a public lecture or panel discussion.
Application deadline: April 30, 2023 for visits during the 2023 – 2024 academic year.
