BEA Student Networking Night, March 8, 7 p.m. (CST)

BEA student members are invited to participate in an evening of networking with broadcast executives, recruiters, producers, news directors, engineers, sales executive, anchors, reporters, manager and MORE. Companies invited include Hearst Television, Nexstar Media Group, TEGNA Inc, Walt Disney, Cox Media Group, Salem Media group, Cumulus Media, and Townsquare Media. BSC accepting applications for 2023-2024

The Board of Student Communications is now accepting applications. Students interested in being the leader of the Times-Delphic, Drake Mag, DUiN, Drake Broadcasting System, Periphery or Drake Political Review should submit a resumé and cover letter in PDF format to jeffrey.inman@drake.edu and gannon.henry@drake.edu. Contact jeffrey.inman@drake.edu. The deadline to apply is March 10 at 4:59 p.m.

Peter Otto to present on March 22 at 7 p.m.

Peter Otto will speak Wednesday, March 22, at 7:00 p.m. in Sussman Theater, as part of a series of events that the SJMC is hosting to explore human inspiration and innovation, the roots of creativity in an age of artificial intelligence. Otto,who studied music at Drake, is a retired USC San Diego professor who ran an arts and technology incubator. He created the audio startup Dysonics, which was recently purchased by Google. He has expertise in auditory imaging, audio design, acoustics, and immersive media technology. 

The final speaker in the series will be Teja Bell, a guitarist, New Age musician, and Zen master. Bell graduated from North High, attended Drake, and teaches meditation for mental and physical health. He will be on campus Wednesday, April 12, with a public event at 7:00 p.m. in the Cowles Library Reading Room sponsored by the Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Slay Fund for Social Justice, and The Comparison Project.

Mark your calendar: Bucksbaum Lecture to feature legendary Washington Post investigative reporter Bob Woodward

Former investigative reporter for The Washington Post Bob Woodward will deliver the Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. on April 4 at the Knapp Center.

Alumni Spotlight: Dave Kelly

Dave Kelly, JO’81, has written and produced Hearts Above Clouds, a documentary that chronicles 100 years of women’s aviation history, starting with Amelia Earhart and concluding with the present day. The film was nominated for a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award.

In Memoriam: Dr. Lou Wolter

Retired SJMC professor Dr. Lou Wolter has died. He taught advertising and public relations from 1969 to 1994 and served as Drake’s first director of marketing. Read more about Dr. Wolter here. Donations may be made in his name to Drake School of Journalism.

March 20 Personal Branding Workshop: Unleash the power of your personal brand to get a new job or to help grow your company. Attendees will explore who you are and what you stand for as a person and build a plan to showcase that personal brand to the world. More details.

April 12 Learn to Create TikToks and Reels for Business: Snider will teach this workshop with Des Moines creator Brad Podray.
