Two Decades of Success!

Old enough to drive, vote and, yes, even have a drink. That’s right, the POLIS Water Sustainability Project is turning 20 this year! And what a long, strange trip it has been. We are thrilled to be celebrating this milestone and couldn’t have made it this far without the support of our colleagues, partners, funders, and water leaders across B.C. (and beyond!) who give of their time and energy and continually champion our work. Read more>

Fourth Annual Water Research Roundup

On February 8th, an engaged panel of emerging researchers and young professionals discussed their work at POLIS' fourth annual Water Research Roundup. Angel Kennedy, Cheyenne Williams, and Aldyn Chwelos spoke on the importance of youth engagement in watershed health discussions, listening to the agency of X’Pey (Western Red Cedar) in a changing climate, and how community is being built through the shared stories of climate disaster survivors. Watch video>

Save the Date! World Water Day Film Screening

Please save the date for a screening of The Soul of the Fraser followed by dialogue with four watershed changemakers! This World Water Day event will be held in person on lək̓ʷəŋən territory in Victoria, BC on March 22, 2023. It is co-hosted by POLIS, the Centre for Global Studies, Birds Canada, BC Nature, Greater Victoria Naturalist Society, and the University of Victoria Sustainability Project. Decision-Making for a Sustainable Future at Selkirk Montessori


On January 18th, POLIS' Laura Brandes and Shayla Auld led a hands-on water allocation workshop with students in Selkirk Montessori School's Sustainability Club. There was lively discussion as the group explored what sustainability means, the many factors affecting freshwater availability, and the complexity of water allocation. Read more>

Calling Young Artists for Ripples 2023!

In partnership with the University of Victoria Sustainability Project and the Year of the Salish Sea, we are calling for young artists (ages 6-25) who reside in the watersheds that surround and feed the Salish Sea basin to join us in creating a collection of artistic works that celebrate the interconnectedness between freshwater and saltwater systems and the critical intersections where land and waters meet. Submission deadline is February 17, 2023. Read more>
