THE ORIGINAL PREPPY HANDBOOK. PUBLISHED IN 1965. THIS IS THE FIRST EDITION. IT IS SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER TERUYOSHI HAYASHIDA. IT IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MENS STYLE BOOK, A SOUVENIR OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND ITS TITLE IS TAKE IVY. Scroll down for the delinquent cats superbook!!
One book - so much to answer for. This beautifully photographed and studiously researched book was published in Japan in 1965 and resulted in a full on national obsession with the Ivy League look and preppy style that resurged in the 80s and never really went away, at least, certainly not until it was more famously adopted by black artists and rappers all the way up to Tyler, the Creator, as documented in the brilliant new Black Ivy book.
This is where it started. This one photo still unsurpassed in sun-drenched revolving door perfection. Not too many women in the menswear superbook, but blue sundress lady carries off that cigarette in ever such cool style.
Checking records in the library. It's not just the clothes, it's the book under the arm, bicycle clips and horn-rimmed glasses lifestyle.
Fraternity is... sharing an umbrella. The photographs, it has to be said, all fashion styling details aside, are just gorgeous.
And instructive! The book is a complete manual of Ivy League (life)style with every college bookshop and wooden tennis racquet supplier detailed and photographed. The book is a masterpiece - as has been well accepted.
And of course this copy is signed and dated 1965. First edition copies with the obi band intact are rare enough - signed, well, that's rarely ever seen.
One final super striding power look. Those shorts are long and tight! The heeled loafers with white socks? Historic.
The signed masterpiece is of course for sale. Reveal the price on the button below :) One book, one buyer. Let's go!!

You want the full story of this 1981 supercharmed superbook. Here's one of Wikipedia's best ever entries:
Photographer Satoru Tsuda originally didn't like cats, but in 1979 he took in four tiny kittens he'd found abandoned at a dry cleaner's shop near his home, taking care of them just as a mother cat would. After a few months he noticed one of them ("Matakichi", named after the dry cleaning business in which he was found) playing with some doll clothes, and the idea for Perlorian was born. The first item was a poster of Matakichi dressed as a motorcycle gang member with the slogan "All Japan Fast Feline Federation — You Won’t Lick Us!". The poster went on to sell 8 million copies and launched a craze for more items. Hundreds of items would be released in a short time, including novelty fake IDs, underwear, and a handheld video game.
Scene from the best John Hughes movie you've never seen.
Inexplicable.
