Len Cassuto

The UAF Graduate School is excited to host visiting author Len Cassuto to the Troth Yeddha' campus March 6-8 2023. Cassuto has been a longtime observer and commentator of graduate studies and recently co-authored the book "The New PhD: How to build a better graduate education" with Robert Weisbuch. 

Cassuto argues for changes in graduate programs that better prepare graduate students both practically and intellectually to make contributions to society and a broad choice of careers.  You can read a recent article and listen to an NPR r interview that highlights the questions raised in “The New PhD”

We encourage you to attend one of Len's talks on campus on Tuesday, March 7th:
  • "Graduate School and Beyond: the Academy and Society”  at 3 pm in the Schaible auditorium with a small reception to follow 
  •  “A Cultural History of Toughness” in the Murie auditorium at 7 pm (Cohosted by the English Department) with a small reception to follow.

Business Fundamentals for Core Facility Administrators
 
Service core facilities that serve a broad audience are increaseingly important to a successful academic biomedical enterprise. They are dependent on advanced technological approaches that need to be paired with skilled and experienced operators to acquire reliable and authentic data in a stable environment. This curriculum is designed to cover major issues that confront the management of these facilities.

The target audience is faculty and staff involved in the planning and/or operation of IDeA-supported biomedical service cores. Principal Investigators and institutional leaders in charge of core facility services are also invited to gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding the development and sustainability of service cores.

to IDeA Co-Funding Webpage
NIGMS provides co-funding to support research project grant applications from investigators in IDeA states whose proposals received meritorious scores through the peer review process but fall short of the Institute's or Center's (IC) payline. More information

PIs are encouraged to contact the PO of your eligible application and the IDeA Co-Funding Coordinator at the NIH IC the application is assigned to, for nomination consideration.

 
POSTBACCALAUREATE TRAINING PROGRAM
The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is happy to announce a new postbaccalaureate training program supported by NHGRI R25 funding (Carol Butt, Christine Beck, Co-PIs). 

The JAX Diversity Action Plan (DAP) Post-Baccalaureate Program in Genomics (gDAP) will focus on research training opportunities and career development programs tailored for trainees identifying with underrepresented groups who aspire to go on to graduate studies and careers in genomics, genome technologies, and data science.

This grant supports a two-year training period focused on genomics and data science. They are seeking up to three Postbac Researchers to start in late August 2023. The application period is open now through April 15, 2023. More information.

URSA ITE Awards - Applications open Feb 6-Mar 12, 2023.  Apply for the URSA Innovative Technology and Education (ITE) Award to earn up to $5,000 for technology-related equipment or software for student-based instruction and/or research. All undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and staff are eligible. Funds must be spent no later than June 15, 2023. Visit the  URSA ITE Award page for more details, eligibility criteria, and to apply online.
