Hybrid kits created at Blue Bar Quilts sent to girls and women in Ukraine

From Nancy Jarvis - Team Leader, Days for Girls:
Hello all

A large shipment of your beautiful shields, bags and liners were sent last week to a Days for Girls collection point in Missouri where they are being incorporated into "hybrid" kits and sent to Ukrainian girls and women. The hybrid kits will include our shields and liners as well as some disposable pads, soap, underwear, all packed in our colorful DfG bags. These kits will provide the girls and women a choice of disposable or washable depending on availability of water, ability for disposal and need.

Our Missouri contact Deanne said they would be able to use everything we sent, and was impressed with the quality of the work and the beauty of our components. They will provide very necessary products for Ukrainian girls and women who are going through unimaginable hardship. Often, if humanitarian aid is received, menstrual pads are overlooked. Days for Girls has gone a long way to making sure this is remedied, and also provide a little color and beauty as well as utility.

Everything we had on the shelves was shipped- a colossal number of pieces!

  • 1077 liners
  • 680 shields
  • 170 bags
  • 1500 of soap

In addition all the folks who put in hours and hours cutting and sewing, many people brought in bars of soap that were sent with the shipment, material that was used to make the components, and donations that paid for shipping. THANK YOU to everyone.

And of course, a HUGE thank you to everyone at Blue Bar Quilts for providing us space for workdays and storage. We could not have done it without you!

warm regards, Nancy

Social Justice Sewing Academy

I am looking with hope to the future and believe that following the lead of our youth will bring progress.

Have you heard about Social Justice Sewing Academy? Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of their young artists make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories, and these quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

For more information on the SJSA and how you can participate in their mission please visit their website: sjsacademy.com.

A Note of Thanks

I am so thankful for your continued business. This international health crisis is going to be a rough patch for so many small businesses and that worries me for all of us in that boat. On the other hand, it has heartened me to see how local communities have rallied in support of their friends and neighbors. May we all remain united in the face of adversity and come through this healthy and happy.

Take care my friends!
