A Note from Mr. Brehm

Dear St. Luke’s families,

As we enter the third trimester and are approaching the three-year anniversary of when COVID first affected our school, we have had time to reflect on many practices.  As much as possible, we are trying to move ourselves back to normal to promote a distraction-free learning environment.

To that effect, we are also reviewing our policies and capacity on student lunches and returning to what has been more consistent and successful.  For some time, we have tried to be as accommodating to your families’ preferences as possible, but our flexibility and capacity has reached a breaking point.  So many lunches are dropped off daily that it is near impossible to track, and lunches can get switched or mistaken.  As one might expect, students also get jealous when a classmate gets a specialized, delivered lunch, such as a kids’ meal with a toy and a soda or milkshake, which leads other students to ask for special lunches, which causes the problem to perpetuate itself.  Students have on occasioned tried to share food which is not permitted, especially for dietary and allergic reasons.

Therefore, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7, students are not permitted:
  • fast food lunches (whether brought from home or delivery by a restaurant or third-party delivery service, like Doordash, Postmates)
  • sodas
  • candy
We will refuse Doordash or other similar delivery orders for students.

Our own hot lunch program has food chosen that reflects our students’ preferences, considerations of health, and does not engender similar feelings of jealousy nor problematic drop-off times.

If your child unintentionally comes to school without lunch at the beginning of the day, you can bring a homemade lunch from home, or rely on the office to provide a snack to get your child through the remainder of the day.  We obviously will not let children go hungry, but we also expect for them to arrive with all of their food at the beginning of the day, just as they arrive with their classroom supplies and just as most of their classmates arrive prepared on a daily basis.  Depending on age and maturity, this can also be a wonderful opportunity to teach children at home the importance of planning and possibly making their own lunch.

Please keep in mind that for years we have tried to be as understanding of your families’ preferences as possible;  we now ask for your understanding when we say that we simply cannot accommodate this option any more at this time.  Thank you for your adherence to this, and if you have any questions, please contact Mr. Brehm.

Sincerely,

Harrison Brehm
Principal, St. Luke Catholic Elementary School

Thank you to our students and families for your outstanding generosity on our most recent paid dress last week for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.  The school raised $683.90, which is roughly triple our normal paid dress contribution!  These funds will join the church's collection and go to Catholic Relief Services to provide assistance to the area.  Thank you again!

Tuition Assistance for 2023-2024 School Year

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The schools in the Diocese of Stockton are blessed to have generous benefactors who understand the growing costs of educating a student and the impact these costs have on families. SEEDS – Growing Faith through Student Scholarships was founded with the sole purpose to help children from families of lower socio-economic backgrounds to have the opportunity of a Catholic education.

ELIGIBILITY: All families registered in one of our Catholic elementary schools are eligible to apply for a SEEDS Scholarship.

PROCESS: If a family is interested in applying for a scholarship, the application timeline is as follows.
  • Applications are accepted from December 1st through March 15th for the following school year.
  • A family is to complete the application process by March 15th.
  • There is a $40 per family application fee, which is paid by the family.
  • An application is considered complete and eligible for consideration when all the required documentation has been filed and verified by March 15th.
  • Please note it can take up to several weeks to verify information, so it is important to start well in advance of March 15th.
  • Applications which are incomplete on March 16th will not be eligible for a scholarship.
  • No later than early June, recipients of a SEEDS scholarship will be notified by the school administrator.
  • Scholarships will be applied to the following school year.
SEEDS Scholarships are awarded as follows to qualifying families:
  • FIRST CHILD: $1,100
  • SECOND CHILD: $800
  • THIRD CHILD: $600

A SEASON FOR SLOWING DOWN During this sacred season, we will intentionally slow down so that we can pay closer attention to our relationship with God, our neighbors and our planet. Reflect on how the pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving can guide your journey for a more enriching Lenten experience. How can practicing these pillars help you to live in solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.
